Giving Up Whey

Has anyone else completely given up whey/supplemental protein?
I recently gave it up, not so much because of concerns over tolerance, etc - but just because I wondered if it was a waste of money. I wanted to at least test it out vs. take every day forever.
I'm just on food and BCAA's, and I've only gotten better.
Workouts are great, strength has slightly improved, recovery is fine.
I'm concluding that whey is a waste of money.
Here's the kicker - I have not increased my food protein to make up for it. I rarely eat more than 130g of protein a day, and I've seen no difference - but maybe a slight improvement.
Been since October.

I don't take Whey everyday but it's something that's a quick replacement if needed.
For example if I need something fast and won't be home for awhile or it's late at night and don't have food in the fridge it's there, I don't ever plan my day around it and would rather whole foods over it anyday.
However for the price and the amount of protein you're getting it's not a bad investment to have in your house compared to other supplements. I don't think it's meant to give anyone an advantage but rather to help supplement one's protein goals, at least that's how I've viewed it for 10+ years.

Is there evidence whey protein holds you back?

Improvement in what?
It's just protein. You need protein no matter what, so it doesn't really matter how you get it (unless you want to get into the specifics of absorbability).
I use it because it's easy, especially when I'm cutting. You get that craving at around 3 or 4 pm and you just mix it with some unsweetened almond milk and some water. Boom.

It makes my smoothies better. Not something I use more than 3X per week anyway.

i have 2 scoops with water every day after workout. Not because i think it is some miracle powder, but more that it is something sweet that replenishes me after a workout so i dont go splurge eating

But what I'm saying is: If I took it out, changed essentially nothing else, and have seen no setbacks...was it ever making a difference? Or was it completely unnecessary?
And if it doesn't make a difference, then why use?

Depending on what you're eating and/or your goals it may not make a difference for you. Others who's diets call for different macros than you it may be necessary. You're taking a really really simple approach to this.

How many times per day were you taking it? Because basically all you're saying is that you decreased your daily protein intake.
Now, there are some brands that were caught lying about the grams of protein in their products (I think MusclePharm was one of them). Studies showed their products were mostly amino acids.
It really depends on what you were taking and how often you were taking it. If it was a protein powder that only had 15 to 20 grams per serving and you took it only once a day, yeah, maybe you wouldn't notice much of difference, and maybe it's not the right product for you.

but he's like worked out and stuff and hasn't noticed much of a difference. It's pretty compelling stuff that could take down the entire whey industry

12yrs working out religiously, always taking whey.
Stopped taking and saw no negative effects. I'd be a fool to keep taking.
Keep your heads in the sand and don't worry about challenging anything.

It's protein, not medicine.
But do whatever feels right for you.

You’re acting like it’s some sort of magic potion or something.
It’s simply to supplement your nutrition to hit protein macros....obviously there are studies that show consuming it within an hour of lifting sessions, enhances muscle growth and recovery.
It’s not like we’re talking about fricking deer antler spray or some shite.

You’re acting its some super anabolic substance. It’s an easy fill in source for whole food.

so what you went from 130 to 165g a day? of course you didnt notice anything.
try going from 130 to 260-300 a day working up to 2x body weight in grams and tell me if you don't notice a difference.
12 years working out and you still don't understand anything about nutrition.

I just stopped taking whey since I started IF. By the time I break fast, I have a big piece of meat and veggies waiting for me. The need for it decreased a ton. I use it sparingly if I’m still hungry or on the weekends when I don’t want to eat much.

wasnt trying to make him feel stupid but I dont understand how somebody works out that long and doesn't understand basic nutrition or why you would take whey to begin with.

35 yrs old.
Double body weight squat for 5. Same for DL.
Less than 13% BF. Still fast. Still mobile.
Don't feel stupid at all.
I was simply pointing out that my (essentially) same macros/calories without a serving of whey postworkout show no difference. Losing the ~30g of protein.
It's fine if you disagree.

You eat 130 grams of protein per day? I eat way too much for that. I'd die. I get about 90 g of protein in lunch.
