I've been sticking to a strict diet for close to a month now (no more than 1500 cals keto) and doing at least 30 min of cardio Mon-Sat. Resting on sundays. I dropped 14lbs almost instantly but now I go down a lb and next day might gain it right back. I've been hitting the weights pretty hard after cardio. My question is how do you know if you hit a weightloss plateau or if I'm still loosing fat and gaining muscle weight. It's very discouraging to get on the scale only to see no progress. I do have a few shirts that seem to fit looser now but not sure.

Get you a scale with a body fat sensor.

They aren't that accurate, but they will still be able to give you a trend. If you are really doing cardio + weightlifting every day I'm sure it's plausible muscle gain is offsetting some weight loss. But at 1500 cals/day...I dunno.

Do you feel better? That'll be a good indicator in general.

how you feel and how your body is transforming should tell you better than weight at this point.

I feel better than ever the last couple of weeks. But as far as being able to visibly tell....not so much. It's like would you notice 14lbs on a Mack truck... probably not lol

Yep. If you have access to a reliable body fat % tester, that's best.

If not, measure your waist, chest, arms and legs. If you can get the waist getting smaller and chest, arms and legs getting bigger, that is ideal. Waist down and other 3 same size is also ok.

This. The waist measurement at the naval will tell the story. But OP you arent gaining much muscle if any at all no matter how new you are to lifting when on keto.

Mine seems to refuse to read lower than 13% when I pass that threshold. I've had a lot more luck tracking bf% past that point with a 5 point caliper test

Why? not enough protein? I'm not questioning you. I'm ignorant in this subject.

Carbs are a basic building block for muscle synthesis, no? Also RIP glycogen levels?

Hard to build muscle in a caloric deficit without carbs. Keto generally is based on a lack of carbs which leads to caloric deficit.

That is certainly not ideal for building muscle. It may be possible to build muscle if someone is starting from absolute zero, but it is certainly not optimal.

Carbs and protein are the best combo to put muscle on. It's frequently hard to cut fat while putting on muscle. Not losing muscle in a severe cut is usually a W.

I eat a few carbs, mostly just protein and not keto for sure. My weight has stayed exactly the same for 3 or 4 months and I've added several reps to my Greyskull numbers over that time. I can only attribute that to gaining strength and muscle while losing fat.

You are eating some carbs and are not in ketosis.

To answer the question above, when in ketosis it is almost impossible to activate Mtor, which is essentially what has to be activated to build muscle.

Strength will be easier to build than size on lower carbs. When I up carbs, I can see the difference in a day or two in size.

Strength, especially for a newer lifter, is as much about building neural patterns as it is building muscle. Just learning how to execute a squat half decently and fire the right muscles in motor pattern will enable you to put weight on the bar.

Build Muscle on a Keto Diet: Nutrition Science

Don't worry about it. Studies are showing it is fine to build muscle on ketosis.

still can't activate Mtor which is needed. Sorry you aren't building much if any muscle without carbs.

For me, cutting fat is priority #1. Once I’m themin, I can add muscle as I want, which as I said in another thread, is not something I’m looking to do. I’m already a large man.

Another time you speak in absolutes and disregard an article because of your OPINION. I have lost weight, gained muscle, and had serious gains on KETO for 2 years. I am not unique or special, quite the opposite actually. I do check blood ketones twice daily, so I don't want to hear I am not in ketosis. Your body cylcles- post workout ketones will drop. When you read about keto infibiting mtor in rats, look and see if the rat was trying to gain muscle- sending the body messages for protein synthesis. Check and see what % protein the rat was fed. I imagine they didn't activate mtor when they were fed 4 grams of fat to 1 g protein/carb.
