Anyone here do fasted cardio in the morning before breakfast? You seen better results than from normal cardio? What type of cardio do you do and do you take anything beforehand? (preworkout/coffee/etc.)

ETA: wrong board

That would give you great results but I’d still have 10g protein and no carbs before doing cardio to preserve some muscle.

I did carb backloading for a while and that’s when I looked my best

I run in the morning and I don't eat or drink anything before. Not for a specific reason though.

No. But when I do, I ask the fitness board.

I used to run before work in the morning. I'd only drink a protein shake about a half hour before running and i saw the weight come off faster

I read this as "Fidel Castro."

I have absolutely nothing to add other than that.

Oh, yeah. Wrong Board!

I read a ton and listen to many podcasts from some of the big guys in the fitness industry, and almost every one of them has said its a myth that you burn more fat during fasted cardio and makes no difference. As far as performance, id just go with whichever makes you feel better. I feel better with something light.

Layne Norton published a study done recently and gave some imput

quote:

A new article on fasted cardio appearing in the Strength and Conditioning Journal by Brad Schoenfeld, MSc, CSCS I put the full text below for those who are interested.
For those that are lazy to read the whole thing here are the cliffs:

-research has shown no difference in total fat loss between subjects doing fasted cardio and those doing cardio after eating.

-fat burning consists of 1) liberating fatty acids from adipose tissue through lipolysis and then transport of those fatty acids to other tissues like muscle, liver, heart where they are then 2) oxidized for energy. When you eat before cardio you reduce lipolysis but it ends up not making a difference because lipolysis is NOT the rate limiting step of fat loss when it comes to cardio, it is oxidation that is rate limiting so you end up oxidizing the same amount -you may burn MORE fat over a 24 hour period when you eat beforehand because there is a GREATER thermogenic response to cardio as opposed to eating fasted

-Lemon et al. demonstrated nitrogen losses were DOUBLED when you train fasted. Fantastic for maintaining muscle in a caloric deficit... NOT

Preworkout before doing cardio?

I don't see how people do that, if any do. I have to workout a good 45 minutes - 1 hour before doing my cardio just because of preworkout. Running on that sh-- makes my stomach turn like a MF-er. Gives me no extra stamina to run either. If I'm doing just cardio for a day I won't do any preworkout.

I agree that it works best from my experience.

"Research" says it doesn't matter, but ask any bodybuilding competitor and most will swear by fasted am cardio for fat loss.

As far as supplements go, this is where powdered Amino's are most valuable

Go google/YouTube Dr. Jason Fung to read about fasting and muscle preservation. Don't listen or worry about muscle wasting, look into the actual science and clinical research.

Do it every morning. 415 to 445. Then my wife does 445 to 515. I dgaf what “research” shows. When you want the scale to move, add in some faster cardio.

Actually if you want the scale to move stop eating so damn much!

I do fasted workouts just bc it works for me. All my runs are fasted as long as its not more than 8-10 miles. I’ll wake up earlier to eat if it’s over 8-10. Usually a PB and banana, sweet potato, cliff bar, etc

Different strokes for different folks. I tend to listen to research findings and a lot are saying it doesn't matter , BUT, if you aren't losing weight like you want, I believe it can help simply because it forces the body to react differently. I'm no scientist or dietitian or anything like that but if the body goes back and forth in some things, it never gets comfortable and will keep up your weight loss.

I pretty much fast before every workout be it cardio or weights and have adjusted pretty well. I don’t have the biggest appetite at 5 AM anyway so it’s not a huge deal. Just some caffeine and I’m good. The hunger kicks in for me around 12-1 in the afternoon and typically my fast is over by then anyway. Results have been good for me. I’ve always been pretty lean but I’ve noticed a little more pop or definition the last month or so. Wife (no pics) is doing keto and I’ve been eating some of the stuff she makes and it’s suprisingly really good I just add a few more carbs bc my workouts are mostly high intensity circuits and I feel less run down with the extra quick energy from the carbs I guess. To each his own.
