I can never seem to find a pair of earbuds or headphones that can compete with my sweaty ears when I run.
Whether it's the problem of the earbuds staying in, or lasting more than a few months, I haven't found a decent pair that has satisfied.
Full disclosure, I've never spent more than about $70 in a pair. Maybe the expensive ones are the answer.

Any recommendations?

No question in my mind, aftershockz. I absolutely love them. I can hear both traffic and music.

I looked Aftershockz up. Are they open ear? That would take care of the sweaty ear, popping out problem.
How do they sound?

I like these a lot. They go in-ear but they’re cheap and work great. I sweat really bad and run 30 or more miles a week with no issues.

100%.

I'm on my second pair. The first pair lasted about a year and stopped charging. I sent an email to them and they shipped me a new pair no questions asked. Didn't even have to send my old pair in.

The key to me with these is the ability to hear what's around you still. As a road runner, having the ability to hear traffic while still listening to music and run app is awesome.

I've read reviews and many are not liking the sound quality. Many are saying "they're as good as sound as you'd expect, since they don't go in the ear."
But many say the volume is just too low.

If you are buying them simply to listen to music, then no, I wouldn't get them. These headphones actually sit on the outside of your ear and not down in your ear. This is by design. Again, the intent is not music quality or volume. The intent is to deliver music but still maintaining the ability to hear around you.

I love mine and wouldn't run without them.

I won some airpods in a raffle 2 years ago. I love em. Use em for everything, but of course, they're not cheap. I just got lucky.

It is nice, when running outside, to be able to also hear the ambient traffic sounds.
But, I also run on a treadmill, too.

Maybe one of these for outside running and another for my treadmill?

I've had Samsung phones for the past 5+ years prolly. I bought a pair of Samsung ear buds about 3 years ago. I love them. Before those, I would go through a new pair of cheaper ear buds ever three months. It killed me to drop $120 on a pair of ear buds, but I'm sure glad I did it. They are still going strong.

Been running with AirPods for years without any issues of sweat damage or falling out. They're pretty damn cheap now if you want to give them a try. I use the non-pro version, as I like how they sit outside of the ear canal so I can hear my surroundings while I workout.

I’ve been using JBL REFLECT MINI 2 for the past year. So far so good.

how good is the retention on wireless earbuds that fit into the ear canal?

I have the ones that have the loop piece that wraps over the ear. If just the ones that fit in the ear, I have trouble with them slipping out once the sweat builds up in my ears.

The Airpod Pros have a setting where it will “cancel” out noise. There is also a setting that will let outside noise in.

i got these anker earbuds about 2 years ago. they sound good, never had one slip out. only complaint - sometimes it takes a couple tries to connect bluetooth. i think they were $100 when i got them so $45 seems like a deal

anker liberty air 2

Been using pros for about 6 months now, can’t believe it took this long to get a pair. I refuse to work out or take a call now without them.

I use my airpod pros for everything except running and working out. I use the Jabras for that. The sound quality on both is unreal.
