I have been thinking about taking a month off of drinking to start the year off this year. I normally drink 2-3 beers 4-5 days a week, and it's getting in the way of the last 10 lbs of fat I need to lose. I actually love making and drinking beer though, so it's been the last thing for me to totally cut (even though it's the most obvious). Is anyone else planning on taking a month off and wants to commiserate? If so this can be the thread.

Starting the new year of 49 years old, 193 lbs, 5'11". I would like to lose to 185 lbs (which may be a bit optimistic) and sleep through the night better (which should be doable). I'll be running Strongville with the PPSA crew and also doing hard cardio plus abs in the rest days. I feel like not drinking at all for the month will help with my goals.

I’ve been doing it the past 3-4 years. I love it. Waking up 100% for a month is a great feeling.

Some interesting stats about dry January

Over 50% if people continue to either not drink or drink much less for years afterward

Is it really that difficult to go a month without drinking?? It would be harder for me to lay off the coffee.

I’ll be joining you but I’m doing Jan 3-Feb 2 thanks to the bowl game Monday. 5’11 218# right now. Trying to get down to 200# by the Masters and this will be a great way to jump start that process

I do it every year. It’s the easiest way for me to drop the 5-8 lbs I gain every holiday season.

I took January and March-April off from drinking altogether in 2022, so no it’s not that hard to do. It’s just also really easy for me to get back into the habit of having a couple beers every day too :)

I'm actually doing this as well. Started the day after Christmas though. Trying to find some NA wines and mocktail recipes to enjoy if we have people over or when I get home from work and want to sit and chill with a cocktail. Hoping I can turn it into a lifestyle change.

Not that I drank that much before, maybe a couple of glasses of wine a few times a week, or a couple of cocktails out, but I have noticed in the last year how terrible I feel and how bad I sleep when I do imbibe. Heartburn during the night, etc. This week I have felt great!

Key is to get through tonight with friends over and sticking to the non-alcoholic champagne and mixers I have on hand. Figure if I can do that, I can get through anything. Wish me luck!

If you’re doing cardio, weightlifting and cutting out drinking, you will have a huge head start and won’t have to tweak your diet much to hit your goals, but you will have to tweak your diet.
If you’re not in a caloric deficit you will not lose fat.

I lost about 30lbs over 2022 even with casual drinking (just plugging the beers into MFP) and getting noticeably leaner and stronger. I have kinda plateaued in the 190-193 range the last 3-4 weeks though due to activity level dropping (it has been too cold to go outside and walk). I figure if I set diet at 1900 cals/day, 175ish G protein then lift 4x/week and hit the elliptical for 2 of the 3 rest days then I should get the results I want. I’d guess I’m currently in the 16-18% bf range and would like to ideally lose enough fat to get in that 13-15% range.

I know that 6-7lbs of fat lost in a month is aggressive but I figure I’ll just go hard AF, do everything perfect, and see what happens. The “don’t drink for a month” part is likely the easiest lever I’m pulling lol.

Planning to play some in the Carolina’s before we go watch. Going to be a fun trip, figured being lighter on my feet would help get around the hills out there

I’m in. Typically do Whole 30 every January to lose the holiday gains. Going to try and add in 3 miles a day walking/running at minimum. Goal is to lose about 10-15lbs. But not starting till the 3rd…

I'll give dry January a shot again. Last year I started right before The beginning of the year and was completely sober January, Feb, and March

Last year I was sober 285 days

Here's to longer streaks and more total days than above

Quit drinking all together. It's a life changer. Going on 2 years now.

This doesn’t have to be a complete sobriety thing

I think it’s okay to not go completely dry but make the effort to limit alcohol intake and it you go the whole month dry then great but there’s no reason to beat yourself up if you have alcohol at times

I think it’s about the effort and intent

This isn’t a super hard challenge for me this year (a few years ago I was a heavy drinker). I just figured a lot of people are looking for fitness challenges in the beginning of the year, need to lose 5-10lbs, and alcohol is pure junk calories.

I will say that after 3 days I already notice that I am better rested than even having a couple beers. Not much change on the scale yet even at a pretty deep deficit though.

I’m switching from beer to bourbon. Does that count?
