I found a study that may support what Bilbeau said:
LINK
It's a meta-analysis of multiple studies that tracked mostly endurance athletes, but also some rugby players and swimmers. It seems like ice baths can reduce DOMS and RPE in the short term but has no difference from the control group past 24h

no i knew about that but in the end it slows recovery over the long term by blunting hypertrophic effects

i guess if you are a high level athlete doing crazy arse shite...like bilbeau fine....but for normal everyday guy its fricking stupid and counterproductive

I could not do 8 running/lifting workouts per week before. I couldn’t do 80 mile weeks before. I couldn’t even double on the same day before.

I felt incredibly less sore in between days before tapering. Do you think I’m making shite up?

can you 100% assure its not from placebo?

and in the long term it essentially makes your lifting sessions useless from a hypertrophic effect.

can i ask why are you doing so much? are you an ultra-marathoner?

I like a cold plunge after a good cardio workout and trip to the sauna. Its refreshing only because I'm a few degrees hotter than normal and if you do it regularly its really not that uncomfortable.

The gym keeps ours at 60 degrees but we go dip in the pool during the winter when it gets in the low 50's and upper 40's.

It does make me feel more awake and helps you not sweat profusely after showing and getting into work cloths. To me, the real benefit is the sauna and the cold plunge is the relief. I don't typically cold plunge after lifting weights.

It's not

We only did non-running exercises twice a week, and those were the second workouts of the day. I have no reason to ice after weight lifting.

It was just college running for cross country (8k -10k).

*Looks at my 30 mile weeks that I consider low mileage*

Me and the boys in the running thread are probably the only ones that need to do ice baths

i dont go in that thread for a reason...i respect yall but think yall are fricking insane

but to be fair i used to do 8 miles a day in the army...i hated that shite. 8 miles, 8 min pace, 5 days a week. that shite ruined me.

wont even catch me running a mile any more

but yea pretty much if you aint a runner...dont do cold plunge.

I don’t think it counts, but I use it to my advantage as well.

I can only imagine that sensation, and don't want to experience it first hand. Awake would describe it, and the only refreshed feeling would be the clean that comes from it.

I bit the bullet and did one today. Only 20 seconds but it’s a start. Shooting for 40 seconds next time. A bit hard to breathe.

No worries about that. Looking for back pain relief. My Hercules days are behind me.

What temp are you doing it at? You’ll get there on the breathing. Id focus on it a little while in there and consciously think about slowing it down.

Id also recommend dunking your head under right away (hold nose of course). Makes it much easier. Just get in there! It’ll be over soon!

I’m skeptical of it. I know it’s gotten trendy on social media, which feeds into my skepticism. Is it really that good for you, or is it another way to lure people to some chick’s OF?
