What type of grip do you guys use for deadlifts and what do you do to practice grip strength?

I notice on top sets, I'm failing on double overhand and have to use a mix grip to complete the lift. I've heard hook grip works well but don't know where to start with that.

Mixed grip. I've never been able to hook grip effectively and double overhand will always limit you. I can hit maybe 150-200 extra pounds with mixed.

If you want hook grip, here's a good explanatory video:

I've never dropped a bar because of failed grip strength. I've also never trained grip.

I use double over until over 405 then mix, hook, or straps.

I pimp farmers walks all the time, but I can say this, if I regularly do heavy farmer's walks, I never drop a deadlift.

Farmers walks = anything you can pull, you can hold.

Hook grip. Once I got used to it, never looked back. Then again, my max is only 355-ish

You’re leaving LBs on the bar if you don’t hook grip, if you even care about that

During my warm up sets I rotate between double over, mixed left, and mixed right.

Continue this as I pyramid up in weight.

My final couple of sets with heavy weight is always done with mixed grip with left under and right over though.

I alternate which hand I pronate just to avoid overuse patterns.

I know people worry about a bicep tear with mixed grip, but if you cue arms straight and have the bar positioned correctly in the hand, I tend to think those concerns are overrated. Setting the bar in the palm triggers a ton of bicep issues on deads, in addition to being less mechanically efficient.

After 225 I mix grip. I can’t hook grip so I don’t bother.

You really need to work on your grip strength if 225 is when you switchover.

Heard drinking your own piss is a great remedy for this.

I find that unnecessary. Don't mix unless it's a top set. Otherwise do straps.

You already said you do Farmers walks.

I do powerlifting, so I think it's necessary to be comfortable mixed. I'd be more worried I'd rip my biceps if I tried it in a meet with no prep.

I don't go to mixed until I'm over 405 and I'll use straps for rep work. I could probably double overhand over 405, but the grip is shaky enough over 405 where it limits my power output.

I've read about people tearing their biceps using mixed grip. I'm also fully aware that my grip strength is complete crap. So maybe I'll give hook grip a try for a while.

Hook grip and straps on heavy sets. I ain’t competing so I don’t give a frick about grip. I only care about doing the lift properly.

So you don’t care about hand strength or forearm strength for real life activities?

I have strong forearms and grip already. I’m not too worried about focusing on it.

I'm mainly talking alternating and overly using it. It's not a hard thing to do.

I've never really preferred one pronated hand vs the other, so trading off is easy for me.

The confidence level is probably mental to a significant extent. I doubt I really need it strength wise. I do think it gives me a little technique wise. With straps, I have an easier time keeping lats tight. Mixed, I have to stay in the groove to keep back tightness more.
