Diet is definitely better. But I'm not sure about 1 or 2 a day.

I know the data is still inconclusive but ingesting shite made in a lab daily isn't something I would tell someone to do. 1 or 2 a week maybe.

its really not inconclusive though. we have decade plus of data now.

laughable people still think the diet versions are worse though,

Yes it was..

Let’s compare 3 scoops of a whey protein powder I have on my shelf at the moment.

2 20 oz Cokes: 480 cals and 134g of sugar

3 scoops of whey: 420 cals, 4.5g fat, 12g carbs (6g sugar) and 75g of protein.

Which one will frick up your insulin levels and lead to severe issues?

I'd argue that it's pretty conclusive that aspartame is safe even in relatively large quantities. Other forms of artificial sweetener I'm less sure about.

Both, actually. Protein stimulates insulin release as well.

But!
A significant portion (~30% IIRC) of those protein calories are burned just digesting it.

We still know very little about metabolic health, my only point.

Are they fine? In moderation, like a not every day, I think anecdotally we can say yes.

I think that's a lot less clear if we are talking about habitual ingestion just because we don't know a ton about how much microbiome and other metabolic health factors actually influence overall health and all cause mortality.

If you ask me is 6 regular sodas or 6 diet sodas a day better, I'd absolutely say diet because we know for sure how bad 6 regular sodas are for you.

But I'd also tell you I'd be careful ingesting that much of any artifical anything.

Just my opinion, and I'm willing to be wrong on it, but I don't think anyone would ever regret completely building their diet from shite that is actually found on/in the earth.

That's fair, there is evidence of gut flora changes and we don't know if that's good or bad. The long-term data suggests that, at worst, they're harmless and at best can contribute to weight loss, but short-term and mechanistic data is inconclusive.

I'm used to people shitting on aspartame because of completely unfounded cancer concerns.

Neither so long you still meet overall caloric and protein goals.

I drink 1-2 diet cokes/coke zeros a day. On the other hand, I drink well over a gallon of water too. I’ve been losing weight easily lately. I guess I’m flushing my system so frequently that’s it’s not as bad as it would be if I didn’t drink so much water. Or maybe I’m just lucky.

If I remember correctly there's some evidence that disagrees. Something about hormone response I think

but the zero calorie versions are literally just sparkling water with food coloring, some flavors, and aspartame.. they are a fantastic option for getting that soda hit without adding calories. One or two day is totally fine.

I took his comment about them being worse as being worse in regards to flavor.

I used to drink soft drinks daily, but never could stand the taste of any of the diet/zero sugar options. It's been over a decade, so I am sure they have made much better strides, but it was always the flavor that did me in.

The ones that make me laugh are the guys that pound 1-2 monsters a day at work, then bitch about how they can't fall asleep at a reasonable time

I rarely drink soda (not counting the white zero Monster, which I drink about 4 a week probably), but when I do, its always a zero calorie soda. In a month I'll probably have maybe 3 to 4 diet cokes. Now I know that, plus the Monsters seems like a lot monthly, but it hasn't seemed to hinder my fitness goals, and it still comes out to less than one soft drink a day. I think that my goal of a gallon of water a day definitely helps, though. Anytime I drink a soda, I almost immediately have to down a bottle of water because I feel parched.

Now beer on the other hand.....

ETA: I'm picking up a case of diet coke this evening from my niece that I bought for her cheerleading fund raiser

Well, its probably closer to 6 a week, but I didn't want Mingo to call me a fat lazy piece of shite who uses caffeine as a crutch to get through my day because no real man needs any of that shite to get through a day.
