Cholesterol Problem

Recently, I was diagnosed with Higher cholesterol and advised to stay away from meat and eggs while having medicine. But, I was not advised to avoid fatty/oily food. I'm confused about why I was advised like that. Usually, we are advised to stay away from fatty/oily food when having cholesterol. Any explanation?

The right oils are good for you and will help raise HDL and lower LDL.
Healthy oils:
Avocado oil
Olive oil
Coconut oil
Grassfed butter (kerry gold)
High oleic sunflower oil
Also eat a diet high in fiber to help lower total cholesterol. Eat 2-3 cups of veggies at each meal, mostly eat berries and apples for fruits, and switch to fibrous carb sources. Brown rice, oatmeal, beans, root vegetables, potatoes, gourds, squash

^^^ not all fats are created equal.
My MIL was put on cholesterol meds a couple years ago. My wife was having her cholesterol monitored closely.
I don’t want to be that guy but......
My wife and I got on keto, her cholesterol problems are gone.
MIL went low carb and is off meds completely.

People respond to keto differently, my cholesterol goes to shite and my LDL skyrockets.
But it is something to try. The #1 thing that will help is weight loss and eating better fats.

Because of keto or because they lost a material amount of weight?

There is "good" fats and "bad" fats. If you had blood drawn, your LDL/HDL ratio probably reflected that you need more of the good fats.

Cholesterol mostly doesn't matter - and to the extent it does, it's unlikely you had the type of blood test that would actually give you the real info you need. Staying away from meat and eggs (if you like eating them!) is terrible advice and almost certainly counter-productive.

If the concern is atherosclerosis, then it's sugar/carbs you should be worrying about. Ingested cholesterol has almost no impact on what you are concerned about. It's disheartening that real practitioners are still spouting this nonsense to their patients.

Have you followed the recent studies they're putting together re lean-mass hyper responders?
And to OP, please get a new doctor. That's all I have to say about that. Lord.

Just demonstrating that I dont think "just go keto" is always the answer.
ETA I think I misunderstood what you meant - I think I agree now that I re-read.
No not at all honestly. I've been tying up my time with other stuff.
Have any good articles to share?

Same re time-other stuff. Let me update and get back to you. The latest I heard was a controlled collection of n=1 studies but they were trying to do a real clinical study too. It's so hard to glean a lot from epi with this stuff.

I haven't kept up much over the last 6 months or so and I'll readily admit there could easily be data I'm missing out on but from what I have learned over the years, it's a bit murky and there's not concensus over one way over the other so conventional MDs tell their patients to get off of the diet if the traditional markers are looking bad.
For sure that's what happened last I did Keto, and honestly I don't love the diet anyway on a personal level, so I took that advice.. That much fat just sits heavy on my stomach and I don't seem to digest it well anyway. In the last year I had an ultrasound on my abdomen because I previously had an enlarged spleen and they found some gunk in my gall bladder, figure that might be why I don't feel great on a high fat diet.

99.9% of people that aren't overweight and exercise don't have health problems. The diet you use to get there isn't all that important, in my opinion.
Granted that diet is made up of whole foods. My personal opinion is genealogy and where your ancestors evolved has a good deal to do with what diet most people do the best on and prefer.

Agreed.
Whatever diet you enjoy and gets you there.
I'm still working on mine... I've tried all sorts and recently I'm ready to go to dieting without tracking everything. I'm so tired of macros and calorie counting. Its not something I want to do for the rest of my life.
Primarily whole foods and portion control by measuring with hands (re: Precision Nutrition guidelines basically), some aerobic exercise every day, and I'm still crossfitting regularly.

It’s hard to say. My wife always had higher than normal cholesterol. Even when she was tiny in college. It’s like her body reset being on keto.
I’ve had heartburn my entire life. Even when I was a scrawny kid. I haven’t had it in 2 years. It’s crazy.
I get that people respond differently, but it certainly helped us.

Same here. I’ve been eating keto without tracking for about the last month. My problem is not eating enough though. I have to track to stuff my face so I don’t drop weight

quote:I don't do "keto" so maybe I don't even know what that is supposed to entail these days, but you definitely don't have to go high fat. I think Naiman's protein focus is probably the way to go.
