What blood tests do you guys insist on when visiting your PCP? I'll be getting a hormone panel done, and probably lipid, but I'm sure there are others that are good to monitor.

Is this just preventative medicine or are you having specific issues? If you're going in for an annual physical, your doctor will do a full blood work up on you and I don't think you need to specifically request anything.

Semi-annual checkup. I had to specifically request the hormone panel, so I'm curious what else I could request that would be nice to know.

Is there a medical reason you go semi annual? I go annually and just do whatever blood tests he recommends. If I bring something up during my visit he will sometimes add extra tests for them to run but I've never asked for anything specific.

Not particularly, other than getting older.

Ended up getting hormone panel, lipid panel, thyroid test, and basic metabolic.

PSA while at it. Blood test to check the prostate function and can show indications if anything is amiss.

ETA: Oh look, I have a downvoter. Must be one of the ones that really like to have the Dr. shove a well oiled finger up his arse for his prostate exam.

Good suggestion. I'll request that one next time.

Blood Tests
Here's my MO with this:

I don't think it's worth getting bloodwork done all that often. If something real is wrong with you, you will in all likelihood know it without having to learn it from bloodwork.

But when you DO get it, at the very least, make sure to order a full lipid panel and not just the common one. I believe you can ask for a CMP - comprehensive metabolic panel.

Also, you should ask for a fasting insulin test. Everyone talks about glucose, but insulin is where the rubber meets the road.

Sorry, I'm late getting back to the party. I would add the PSA (as someone else said) and perhaps a testosterone level if you're getting older and worried about your T levels.

The test will come in the hormone panel.

We typically do an executive panel which is CBC, CMP, Lipid, TSH.

Then we do a BioTE pane which is all of the above, vitamin D, Hormones, and I think a PSA for males.

If you’re not over 40/45, I wouldn’t worry about the PSA unless you’re having specific issues.

Is it better to go in for a physical to get blood work from a doctor's office than going into a lab price wise? I've been wanting to get my hormone levels checked but lab tests are expensive and I never thought to just go to my PCP and maybe insurance will take care of it

That’s what I did. Insurance covered it. Pretty sure the doc wrote it up as ED related.

Insurance covered mine. Hadn’t been to the doctor in probably 15 years prior to that.

I do the basic every year. Cholesterol, and the normal things. Last year I did a big panel, with my vitamins, and hormones. That one is like 6 vials, my normal one is like 2 vials. I'd suggest doing to big one every couple years, won't hurt, and it didn't cost me any extra. Wellness visit

I do the same. It’s crazy what a doctors office charges insurance for blood work.
