Strongman.

Train strongman.

For lifting weights, go powerlifting. You can become stronger than you can imagine doing powerlifting-style training.

Use a shovel for 8 hours a day for a couple of months. Turn a wrench. Haul sacks of feed.

Go work on a farm it would seem.

What Beam and Tide say. Not sure how old you are, or what your situation is.

I was born into an ag. family. My dad is almost 72. He’s finally starting to look like an old man- but he can still throw a 50 lb. sack of feed on his shoulder and do whatever with it.

Go make square hay with someone- at 17, me and a few friends would help a guy make 1600 bales in Carencro. Pick it up, put on the trailer, take off the trailer, throw them above a stall, stack them above the stall. You get the point.

My family owns a feed store. For the better part of my life, we didn’t own a forklift. Or a pallet jack. Truck would come in with 2000 little 33lb blocks. 2000 of them. My dad would have me and a couple guys pick them up out of the trailer, stack them on a dolly (about 12 on the dolly)- so now you’re pushing a 400lb cart and then restack them across an old warehouse that was about 100ft long.

The warehouse had a ramp (it was truck height) so you even sometimes had a 30’ long or so incline to tangle with while rolling 10 50lb bags of feed down to the other building. With no brakes.

Try all that for a few summers in the Louisiana heat.

There was an old guy that worked there- he had been doing it since he was 17. I don’t know that there are Crossfit guys that are in shape like this guy was.

So- what is a “farm strength” workout?

Hundreds or even thousands of reps outside with moderate weight and the occasional outburst of having to pick up a 200lb. calf and throw it in the back of the truck.

Build strength in the barbell movements and bodyweight movements and then work on carries and throws with a bunch of different implements and different types of holds.

Flip tires and push sleds for conditioning.

Do your normal strength training routine. Start doing more actual work. Chop wood, push a wheel barrow, dig with a shovel, et cetera.

If you want to defend yourself, then go join a wrestling, boxing, jiu jitsu, krav maga, or muay thai class. Even if you stick with it for just 6 months, it will give you much more confidence getting physical with someone.

I've been splitting logs for bonfires since it started getting cold. The pump in my shoulders and biceps is awesome! I keep thinking I might be looking like Zoolander in the coal mine though haha.

Depends if you think tossing 200 lbs around a few times is better than tossing 50 lbs around all day long. No right answer to this, just a matter of opinion and priorities.

Strongman can’t train how they do all day otherwise they’d get all sorts of injuries. It’s too hard on the body. And remember, some of the guys, especially at the highest level, are freaks. So they very much value recovery and so on.

And yes priorities do make them different. But strongman are usually extremely strong all around. Lifting atlas stones (that have weighed in excess of 500; the world record is 675), pressing 300-500 pound logs over head, deadlifting, tossing 20-65 pound kegs, pulling planes, farmers carry, etc. Not to mention most of the guys have a powerlifting background (there are some exceptions). Sorry for rambling on.

If anybody was interested you could devise some kind of "farm strong" contest: shovel two tons of sand for time, stack 100 bales of hay, etc. Pretty boring to watch though.

Well.... how old are you? You can "want" to train for that kind of strength, but can your body take it?

Strength does not equal fighting ability. Join a jiu jitsu gym or learn Muy Thai or boxing.
