I know I've seen a few posters over time that have done it. And it looks like there are a few ultra runners here. I just signed up for my first on Friday .

I just finished a 70.3 and although I was not happy with my time, I went in with the mindset just to finish due to a crazy month and a half prior to my race and did that easily. Not to mention that I was supposed to be racing NOLA the week before, but it was cancelled, so I signed up last minute for Austin which left me over tapered and hitting some hills on the bike and run that I was not prepared for.

But the fact that finishing was easy enough, and knowing where I can improve training, I took the plunge (a mighty expensive plunge, Ironman has to be a cash cow). Think I'm going to get a coach for this one as well.

I would have loved to back in my military days. Was running 30-40 miles a week on average.

Swimming 2-3 miles, and in the gym the rest of the time.

I know those are pretty mediocre numbers compared to what some guys do but that was the best shape of my life.

I think most people would be surprised at what they could do if they put their mind to it. But that's the deal. The mental aspect of being out there for 12 hours. The day in and day out of waking up to go to the pool at 4:30 a.m.. Again, I was upset with my time, but very surprised with how easy it was to cross the line at the half. Still a lot of energy (probably because I walked a shite ton on the half marathon when I didn't really need to ).

Isn't Augusta the one where a bag of potato chips finished the swim before cut off. People always said it as a joke, but a guy did a youtube video and put his GPS watch in a Ziploc with a bag of chips. It floated the 1.2 miles in time while he monitored from a kayak . That's my kind of swim.

My dad (a former marine DI) has done 2 full iron men and several halves. He's an endurance freak. Countless marathons and several ultras. He posted an 18hr44min 100 miler in 2009. I've done a half marathon and have had serious thoughts to do a half iron man but I'm not willing to leave the weight room just yet. I have a ton of respect for endurance athletes and I honestly feel they have a higher IQ than weight lifters even though running 26.2 seems stupid lol

I've done 3 70.3s and I don't really have any desire to do a full for a couple reasons. I like the 70.3 distance because I feel like I can still "race" it. Not to the level of getting on the podium of an Ironman branded 70.3, but it's possible in time. I also have no desire to be on a bike for 5-7 hours.

A lot of people do triathlons for different reasons and I'm not one to judge, but every time I've finished a race, regardless of the distance, I have nothing left in the tank. I'm not interested in doing a full to check off a box, but some want that. To each their own.

I would say to race it and have fun. Set goals and actually try and reach them. I find it much easier to train when I have specific goals to race towards.

If you're not happy with your time and you had a ton of energy when you finished, why didn't you race harder?

Was my first and it was mostly mental. Little nervous and had also convinced myself I just wanted to finish. Was a hectic few weeks leading up to it with a race getting cancelled, my wife requiring emergency surgery, lots of travel, etc. So I just appraiched it like an accomolishment more than a race. I convinced myself to go at a comfortable pace. Which was too comfy. I normally can't eat for a while after a sprint or Olympic and that was not the case in my 70.3. I leave what little I have out there and usually feel weak and kind if sick if that makes sense. I just didn't do that well this time and know I can do more. It was one of the reasons I wasn't happy with myself. But it did take away the fears I had of jumping up in distance. Still nervous, but realize I have much more in me than I thought when pacing properly.

I plan to do more 70.3's in the future. Never expect to get competitive, but I know I can knock an hour off my time (Hell, 30 minutes was just me being lazy). Ironman is a goal that I only plan to do once for now, and it's also in my backyard (live in the woodlands). I met with a few coaches and chose one yesterday. He realistically thinks I could have a sub 12 hour time, and that is what I'm looking for. Do it once, but do it with a solid effort for my ability. Im not getting a 10 hour and change time without 2 more years of training hard. But that's not what I'm looking for. Now, I'd love to sniff 5 hours (realize that's not competitive, but it's pretty solid for me) in 70.3 and think my schedule allows it. But Ill think about that after April.

Did the full 4 years ago.

A great benefit of living in Madison is cool yearly events like this.

Would like to do it again. Its a fun long day. I had a blast.

Anyone can bike ride. Anyone can swim in a wet suit. Its a matter of putting yourself in a position to finish under the cut off time while budgeting for some slow time on the marathon.

It's not as bad as you think.
Do it!

I have. When is yours? Start riding a lot now to build a cardio base. And get a heart rate monitor and learn how to train with it.

First IM is only about finishing, don't worry about time.

Everything is about starting the second 1/2 of the marathon with some matches left to burn.

April. Doing IMTX. Been into triathlon for a bit, so I'm loaded up with gadgets (Garmin, HRM, Power Meter, etc.). Also working with a coach. Still have my fitness level from my half, so building from there.

Coach has a strong cycling background, SO I feel I will get a lot of bike focus. Spending the next two months building run volume, but going to get my hours in the saddle come January (not that I'm not riding now). At least that was the initial discussion.

Any progress to report? I'm also training for IM Texas in April, I've never attempted anything remotely like this, at least not in the last decade. My frame of mind alternates between confident / calm / optimistic and OMG / WTF / NO!!!!!!!

Gun goes off 100 days from today. I came here looking to ask the same question (who on the board has done one) and found your thread.

Good luck, hope it's going well.

Achilles tendonitis right out of the gate had me completely off running. Only picked up about two weeks ago. Longest run so far is about 6.5 miles which is scary. But at the same time, extremely easy considering I hadn't run for about 6 weeks. Gives me confidence that the aerobic side is already there, just need to pound the miles into the legs.

Seeing FTP increases on the bike much faster than expected. But only gotten up to 3 hour rides so far. Expect to be out there for just over 5.5 hours on the bike, so still need to build that volume.

Swimming is meh. I'm faster than I've ever been. Actually started getting to what I've always considered "above average" (cracking into the 1:30's per hundred range). But recently had a set back and can't figure what it is. Lost about 3 seconds per hundred over a 1k time trial and am back in the 1:40's.

Overall, it's just a long process. Life's ups and downs surely play a huge role. Work has gotten stressful over the last few weeks, wife was out of town for a week so I had a 3 year old to take care of, and even just this weather spell really messes with the whole process. To me, with the half, finishing wasn't just a relief to finish the race itself. It was everything you put into it for the 6 months before coming together. The day to day grind has it's ups and downs. And I'm currently on a down . But there's always an up to follow it. Just waiting for that to kick in.

LOL, this is where I feel like I'm so screwed. Haven't come close to three hours yet. The weather has been a bitch, and I haven't been able to stay on the bike inside on the kinetic trainer for more than 90 minutes ... not because of fitness, really, but because of the boredom, I guess. Scheduled to get 45 miles in this weekend and I think that'll do wonders for my headspace.

Swims are okay, running no problem either, longest run has been 10 miles, but it was very comfortable. Brick workouts are scheduled to start at the end of next week.

Putting in time on the bike, plus figuring out a strategy for managing fuel during training and on race day are my biggest worries. That, plus an overall anxiety about hitting on all cylinders on game day.

The ability to do long rides on the trainer are invaluable. Those 3 hour rides im doing are on the trainer.

I have a Tacx Vortex and use Zwift to build a workout. It automatically controls the resistance. I also have a couple movies lined up to watch. A nice strong fan set on me and just ride with minimal interruptions. It's mentally tough, but figure that's a good exercise for race day. 3:30 ride with a brick run after this weekend. I'm above the fitness I had for the Half back in October, so that's good I guess.

I got a coach which is helping. Before, I'd have a few bad weeks, freak out and change up my approach and over do it or something. He's kept me level headed so far.
