I was advised to look into diaphragm breathing techniques (aka stomach breathing). Anyone actively doing this training for overall health?

I read that this is how we naturally breathe as infants, but we have to retrain ourselves as adults b/c we have become chest breathers (due to stress/anxiety).

Maybe there is some dumb life hack video for breathing

I don't know. Not something I would worry about.

If you do breath training for freediving that is how it's done

I’ve watched a few videos about a guy named Steve Maxwell. He trained with the Gracie’s for Jujitsu.

He claims there are athletic benefits to this. Diaphragm/stomach breathers tend to get less winded b/c they are using all of their lungs.

As a day to Day benefit, his thoughts are that the chest breather is only using the top 1/3 of the lung. He goes on to say this should only be the case in fight/flight type situations. So unknowingly, people are living in an adrenaline state— irritable, stressed, other health problems.

I thought it was a interesting topic for this board.

I've seen stuff on it and it seems like new agey hokum to me, but hey, if it works for people, different strokes for different folks.

I'm a bigger fan of it as part of a larger commitment to meditation. It seems to naturally fit with that.

I'm not a meditation type, though. I'm more of a crank up the Metallica and DMX and see how much heavy iron you can move.

Elliot Hulse was pushing the holistic breathing for a while. Maybe look at some of that stuff if you're interested in seeing a guy who likes it.

This. Rickson Gracie is big into breathing like this. I think he actually demonstrated it in a Spider Man movie. No lie.

I breathe from the stomach. Helps with bracing in heavy lifting.

It can be very effective when squatting or deadlifting

learning how to breath and brace you core effectively, it makes you be less reliant on using a belt.

I have not used a belt in 5 years after a guy one day randomly showed me this while i was deadlifting. He was pulling 550+ with not belt and wasn't a huge guy at all.

Initially your numbers go down but after that it went back up and ive never looked back.

I'd thought OP was talking about diaphragmatic breathing for energy. A lot people tout it as increasing energy and health:

I'm not sold on that. Utilizing the Vasalva maneuver for heavy squats and deads is different, and that is super effective. Chris Duffin and Brian Alsruhe have great videos for breathing and bracing patterns in heavy lifts that helped me a lot.

Yuri Belkin and Dan Green go without a belt deadlifting sometimes. They both pulled 900+. Truly outstanding.

I do not have any success stories in this area but may look into it further. I think there are some improvements that I can make, both for general health and also for maximizing athletic performance when lifting or playing sports. Why were you advised to look into it?

While I rarely feel 'stressed', I did a pilates/yoga class a few months ago that ended with deep breathing meditation. For the rest of the day, I had an extremely relaxed feeling throughout my entire body. I think it's certainly possible that there is a level of stress and adrenaline that starts to feel 'normal' but can be removed with advanced breathing techniques.

I believe I could become a better runner with better breathing. I always "catch" myself just taking short breaths, instead of good deep breathing. Even when I am just sitting around.
Improper breathing has to lead to quicker fatigue.

Anything that requires hard physical exertion could benefit from better/deeper breathing. The reason that it is beneficial to wrestling/jits/MMA people is that you exert so much cardio that you kinda forget to breath right or sometimes at all. I have seen guys black out just from holding their breath on the mat.

Same principle applies to swimming too, although you are forced to get air at some point, yet, lots of new swimmers don't take in enough when they gulp for air.

there's a ridiculous number of studies out there on the mental and physical benefits of daily breathing exercises. i'm not going to go searching for them, but a quick google search will show it.
