Almost jogged a mile yesterday
4 laps. Had to walk to get my breath.

You’ll get there. I HIGHLY recommend the Couch 2 5K app. I started it in August of last year at 45. This year I have set PRs in both 5&10Ks. Oh yeah, I’ve lost 20 lbs in that time frame.

I would love to row, but can't really go to gym. Weight lifting is hard

re: Almost jogged a mile yesterday
I’m doing 5 min intervals. I’m up to 2 minutes jogging 3 minutes walking. I do that for an hour 3 days a week. When I started a month ago I was sucking wind hard after 30 seconds
I’m in my mid 40s

In a normal year, I would say sign yourself up for a race. Having a goal to reach for helps with motivation.

I started jogging in January and it took me 34 minutes to do a 5k. I’m now down to 23 minutes. Stick with it.

re: Almost jogged a mile yesterday
I started today for the first time in about 8 years. I was jogging 3-4 miles at a time at an 8 minute pace or so. Today I did 2.2 miles in 35 minutes, mix of jogging and walking. I'm a little surprised how much I fell off.

8 years ago I was 185lbs. Right now I am at 224 coming down from 275 6 months ago.

Good stuff.

When covid lockdowns hit and gyms were closed I ran my first 5k and did it 2 more times. I'm 6'2, ~255 so it wasn't easy, took like 45 minutes Running isn't my forte. But it's 95% mental. You can always put one foot in front of the other if you just refuse to quit.

It is crazy how true this statement is. Before I went into basic training, I couldn't run a half mile without walking and had never been a runner at all. Obviously I struggled with the running at first but then it pretty much changed one morning.

As we were doing our morning PT (that day was a run day) there was a group of us sucking wind hard. 2 of our MTIs were running past us and noticed us struggling. He looked at us like we were complete morons and said "its just running. you'll live."

6 months later at tech school in BFE Texas I went for a jog on the massive 1 mile track next to the runway. That day I got lost in my thoughts, watching jets take off, and nice spring weather to the point that I accidentally ran 8 miles. Ever since that one morning when I am running and start to struggle I just focus on the phrase and it gets easier.

Since then I have gotten out of the military and it has been a while since I've ran. Lately I've put some sympathy pounds on with the wife being pregnant. This thread has actually given me to motivation to start back up again.

Good job keep going. If you’re in here much use this thread as an accountability log. That’s what I’m doing with mine.

I second the couch to 5k app. I hated running before and for some reason or another each week became a goal to complete and made it exciting. I’m now on to couch to 25k. After only a year. I can run for 1 hour nonstop (albeit a slow pace 12min/mile) with no issues

re: Almost jogged a mile yesterday
I find the trick for me is when I'm feeling out of breath and tired and wanting to give up, I've lost my breath control. Focus on breathing again and getting my rhythm back, and before long I'm good again. Take a couple of big deep breaths, then get back to 4 steps in, 4 out. I don't zone out, it's too difficult. I have to be hyperfocused on breathing.
