man im just sensitive about the add thing. i dont want the kid on it, but he is a gifted kid(iq-135) and between the add and his sensory disorder he was struggling to pass even kindergarden. brought him to 3 different doctors about it, first 2 recommended the medicine immediately so took him to one that is known to not recommend the medicine and even she did. now his grades reflect his IQ and he has made straight As every single yea now and this is a school that is not easy.

no doubt the OT helped with the sensory disorder, but much of it has been his ability to concentrate on the task at hand now. it also makes a huge differnce in his reactive ability.

ill be honest i hate him being on it and hopefully he can eventually get off and when not in school, we try to not let him be on it. We keep the dose as low as possible too.

but ill be frickign damned if i am lectured by a kid with no expierence with kids period. aint like im pumping the shite down my kids throats, only 1 takes it and its because he can hardly function school wise without it. I wish it wasnt the case but it is.

man

I have a 1st cousin that is ADHD and he takes max dose extended release Adderall and then drinks like 3 monsters a day. He's been taking the adderall for so long he has started to struggle with focus again over the last 5 or so years, so he started on the monsters. How the frick doesn't his heart explode? It's gotta be shaving years off his life

i mean caffeine is good for you to a certain extent but yea i would image combined with adderall or things of that nature...its not good.

i have cut back big time and hardly ever get to 400mg. i used to be at a gram a day.

I would love to get off caffeine, I think it makes me anxious. But damn I love a cup of coffee in the morning, and when I get to work.

I feel this. Except my kid isn't gifted. He has a genetic disorder that gives him borderline poor IQ. He also is on the spectrum and has a ton of developmental issues. He has a ton of problems socializing with other kids his age as well, preferring to socialize with adults. He's not hyperactive at all, but just disorganized to the point of not functioning and unable to focus on tasks or complete them at all.

Before he got on Vyvanse, he was pretty much in the all resource classes, and we pretty much despaired of him really being able to function independently, because of how distracted he would get by any loud noises (think "Squirrel!" from Up). He's been on Vyvanse since 6th grade, and he's now in 11th grade. He still needs extra help, but he's a delight at school, interacts with others, truly loves going to school and learning, and can actually engage in self-care to the point that we feel he will likely be self-sufficient someday (worrying you'll die without your kids able to take care of themselves is a real bummer).

I also hate him being on medication, but it's way better than the alternative for him and has truly been a miracle.

Our other son is probably way more classical ADHD, and his teachers would probably love for us to put him on medication, as he talks a ton. But he's also extremely active and engaged in action sports (mainly mountain biking) and racing. He has hyperfocus on things he's interested in but kind of blows off the parts of school he's not interested in. I'm sure that Adderall or Vyvanse would "help" that, but it would also change the things that make him successful in the parts of his life he's passionate about.

Agreed. Bill Engval said, “I had ADD for about 15 minutes when I was a boy. I was cured with a whoopin then was able to concentrate.”

pretty much same situations with youngest being classic adhd. my middle shows no signs of either. I am classic adhd but refuse to start medicine as an adult and am very similar to your youngest where i can hyper focus but also have problems staying on task at times.

my oldest was so bad that during test and stuff all he would do would be focusing on his sensory disorder to the point he would just be trying to put the chair or desk legs on his feet so he could get sensory from them and wouldnt even answer a single question on the test. The medicine has been a game changer for us. before he was diagnoses his teacher said they didnt see it cause he wasnt hyper and was well behaved and they didnt understand why he was having issues. we have come along ways and he is actually gifted and twice exceptional as in 2 learning disabilities and he still struggles with disgraphy and written expression but he kills it in math and science and kills it verbally. socially he is fine, little nerdy but has lots of friends and does well in sports.

my youngest who is adhd....all he cares about is sports he does well in school when we make him sit down and concretrate and remove all distractions. both my older 2 are gifted, havent had my youngest tested yet.

yea i used to think that too even though i knew i had it, but my oldest is way way way way worse than me and no arse whoopin is gonna help. in the 6 hour test and examine he asked if they were done yet 142 times.

Clonidine and Atomoxetine are non stimulant alternatives. You could also consider a methylphenidate if you specifically want to avoid amphetamines.

We're going to try the diet thing with #3. I don't like brain meds, we know they have affected his sleep and appetite. Problem is he also has epilepsy and has to take meds for that which amplify the ADHD and jumping off walls.

Don’t feel bad. I’m now an adult and I was a Ritalin baby at age 5 or 6. I’m the same as your sons. Tested gifted, very curious from a young age, always asking why, active, played sports growing up.

I’m still taking low dose extended release adderall daily.

I became an engineer, got married, have a career, have children. I have a lot to say about the medication and I’ve contemplated it’s role in my life immensely. I would like to quit one day as there are some minor negatives but so far nothing long term or anything you would be able to pick out from your own personality traits or flaws. Overall it’s been a benefit in my life.
