And if they could thicken the fescue up these guys wouldn’t be so nonchalant about driving it into the fescue.

And if the wind was howling they would shoot 90

This is where I disagree with your very defensive and for some reason angry takes. Making it more penalizing for going into the fescue, especially on the shorter holes, would not make them blow up into the 80’s if the wind was howling.

Some of the holes the only defense is the rough and the guys right now are basically hitting it into the rough on purpose which means there is no defense and really no risk. Make the rough more penalizing and the risk reward holes actually become risky.

Even 50mph winds that randomly gust wouldn’t stop these guys from trying to bomb drivers up to the green since the rough isn’t penalizing at the moment.

Before you get super angry at me and have a heart attack because I dared make a comment you don’t like. I’ve loved watching this years open and think it’s been a totally fair test and agree with harsher wind conditions the scores wouldn’t be so consistently low.

It wouldn’t be Saint Andrews then.

The short par 4s are the course.

Nothing wrong with players going low in a major.

I believe Faldo in 1990 was this much under and that dude is hitting a balatta ball with a wooden head.

Yea I’m not that much in favor of changing the par 4s. Like the poster above said I think making the fescue more of a penalty would be much better.

Even with that I think the course is great how it is. It’s interesting. Even with good conditions it gave a lot of good players real trouble. The field average has been a little over 72. Seems reasonable to me.

For sure, the beauty of the old course is when you wake up you have no clue what you are gonna get.

All these links courses are so dependent on the weather. Catch them in the wrong wind direction and over par would be leading. I wish they would leave the greens hard and fast. I played Turnberry about three weeks before the open in 94 and the greens were unstoppable. Come tournament time, the guys were spinning walls back.

[quote liked it a lot more in 2015. No wind and very dry fairways.[/quote]

This tournament literally did not finish until Monday due to wind/rain

So far today it’s been a snooze fest.
There’s very little danger out there.
The holes all kind of look the same.
It’s mostly drive, wedge and two putt.

It did get very interesting at the end, but the golfers destroyed that course. They need some wind machines.

They’ve had the nicest 4 days of weather possible.

Don’t touch ANYTHING. 300 yard par 3s are stupid. 650 yard par 5s are stupid.

And if you hit it in the wrong places on those short par 4’s birdie turns into a 6 before you can blink.

Thoughts on St Andrews?

Goosebumps. Even my wife, non golfer, appreciated the history and significance. The place is just GOLF.
The experience is incredible.

It was a fun course. The sand in the bunkers is so different. Hitting out of the fescue is unique. In my opinion, its all about the total experience.
The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. You are directly across from the beach were they filmed the famous running scene in Chariots of Fire (old person alert).
Links golf is just different and it's incredibly fun.

Okay, and now for the blasphemous take ...
With no wind or rain, it is a pretty easy and ho-hum course. Four holes that you remember. 1, 16, 17, and 18.
Don't forget, there are other courses there and the New Course is highly regarded.
The Old Course is all about the total experience, and that is well worth it.

Par is just a term, but it messes with so many fans minds

If they called it a Par 66 then the winning score this week would have been +4 and a lot of people would be talking about how hard it is

Look at the winners at St. Andrews. It almost always produces a champion that is worthy, not some lucky schmuck. For that, it’s a course that does not need changing

Just seems a bit too easy,

These are the best players in the world, this is one of the times you realize just how good they are. There is nothing easy about it. There's nothing wrong with a major having some lower scores on it, I kind of like it. Unlike the US Open who will make stuff so difficult it doesn't even play like a normal golf course, more of a "Ha! We got you!" They were still having to display a completely different skill set than usual and it's crazy how good they are at adapting.

Why do you people post this stuff when you have no concept of the history of this championship on this course or the British Open.

Says the guy calling the tournament by its incorrect name, most commonly called that name by people who have no concept of the history of THE OPEN championship
