What are your thoughts on the way the course is playing, particularly the way these guys are over powering the course, driving several of the par fours. I like the history of the venue, but it’s almost goofy golf being played out there. I wish they would add about 50 yards to some of these 350 yard holes, I don’t know if that’s even possible, though. I like the winning score of majors being around -10

They are just catching it with little to no wind.

Lack of rain has the fescue thinned out and weather conditions have been favorable

I get that it’s favorable conditions, but they just said the average winning score over the last three opens there was like -16. Just seems a bit too easy, and again, I’m not advocating for not playing it there ever again, but they should do something to make it a little more difficult. Particularly if you miss your spot off the tee.

There’s no room to extend these holes. There are always low scores when the Open is played there. Just enjoy the interesting golf.

With the right wind St Andrews is fun and you can score.

With the wrong wind it’s a nightmare.

Drivable par 4s have never bothered, nothing goofy about them IMO.

This mindset is what messes courses up. You can’t just constantly lengthen everything.

Once again another poster with no knowledge of the history of the game, Faldo was further under par on this course 32 years ago.

Low IQ, SAD

Why do you people post this stuff when you have no concept of the history of this championship on this course or the British Open. Everythind depends on the wind, if they set the course up much harder or longer or worse rough it would unplayable if it came on to blow.

Read a book, watch, learn, it will help you not make a fool of yourself on message boards.

They could do a couple things different. There are actually some par 4s that they could make par 3s. And if they could thicken the fescue up these guys wouldn’t be so nonchalant about driving it into the fescue. Leaders would probably be at -10 right now if that happened.

And if the wind was howling they would shoot 90

No they would shoot like they did in the 70s and 80s before guys were driving it 400 yards. They wouldn’t be able to grip it and rip it long into all this fescue without fear.

The winning score is going to probably be 22 under and you are worried about making it too hard?

I liked it a lot more in 2015. No wind and very dry fairways.

It all depends on the weather, like I said Faldo was further under par 32 years ago. You couldnt break 120 on it as it is so why are you so worried about it?

Go look at scores by year, it varies wildly, there are tons of double digit under par winners from the 50's until now. It all depends on the weather.

Put another dozen or so bunkers in places and the scores would dramatically increase

The course is on the sound, and the biggest defense of the course is the wind. With the low winds that they are getting right now, St. Andrews is no match for the current equipment. On Tuesday, the wind had kicked up and you could tell that everyone was having a lot more trouble. They were having to lay up on a few more holes and weren't able to go pin hunting.

I was fortunate enough to play the Old Course about 2 weeks after Daly won there in 1995. We caught it on a day like today, with little wind and the t was defenseless. I shot 70 and could have shot 65 had I putted better.

The very next day, the rain came and the wind was blowing 25+mph all day. It was damn near unplayable. I struggled to shoot 80 and was lucky it wasn’t 90.

It is not a long course at all. Even for average golfers, if there is no wind or rain, it is gettable.
Played in perfect conditions and shot 76.
I have lower scores, but this is my best round ever based on circumstances.

ICYWTK ...
Camped out at the shack for tee time from 10pm until 6am the next day. No warm up. No practice. Rental clubs. First time ever with a caddie. Second out in front of all the other golfers. Played with a threesome from NJ. One of them was their club pro. No pressure.

I Like it.

Low score wins.
I just like that you can play different flights into the holes instead of having to carry a cross bunker or pond in the line of play over and over.

The weather has been too good to protect par.

All the USGA does is call a couple of par 5s par 4s and make par 70 instead of 72.

I guess I don’t shoot those kind of scores so I’m not worried about whether 66 is 6 under or 4 under.
