No way. John Daly with his Grip It and Rip It averaged less than 300 yards that year. Probably closer to 290. Now, a lot of Tour guys average over 300.
I can remember when Curtis Strange was the “Million Dollar Man”, because he was the 1st to win $1,000,000 in prize money in one season. Today that is one tournament winner’s take.

They already do this. The guys who bomb it can still hit an iron down the fairway if need be. Distance isn’t going anywhere. Once people realized speed was a real advantage the floodgates opened.
The only way you’ll challenge that is long, thick, rough. And even then you’ll have someone beat it like Bryson did last week. These guys are really really good.

Agree 100%
Power in athletics will always be advantage. Plus it's not like they are forcing 310 yard carries. Plenty of fairway for the short hitters but they just have to do everything else really good to win.

Not sure if this is feasible from a maintenance standpoint though.
Or keep the rough super long everywhere, but have the fairway much wider up to 280-290 (like 2x as wide) but then neck it down to really narrow 300+ from the tee. This would allow for same rough height but overall less penal for shorter guys.

This, or having the fairway get narrower once it passes 300 yards are the only real options to stop the long guys from having a big advantage.
Winged foot also has really big rectangle greens without much sand in front of them to keep guys from going for a par 5 in two or a par 4 in one.

I don’t get this at all. It seems pretty straight forward - get longer if you think it’s that big of an advantage. If someone works to get bigger and stronger off the tee, they need to be penalized?

Most of the time he just takes his normal stock cut, thats what works for him.
He also hit the 7th longest drive in the last decade on tour at 430 yards at Firestone.

Some guys can bomb it every time and okay well with the results as we just saw. Some bomb it and they can’t deal with the outcome.

Exactly, anyone watching the US Open saw DeChambeau had a great tournament on and around the greens. He wasn’t just getting on par 5s in two and tapping in for birdies, he was scrambling and putting too. The guy was different sure, but he did a lot of the things that champions have to do to win a major. I thought he showed a championship level of play in all phases.

If you want to make fairways a premium just make the primary rough basically a penalty shot like Shinnecock, the rough last week just wasn't up to US Open Standards.

His PGA was at Riviera playing 6956 yards, Winged Foot just played 7500 yards so we are talking 550 yards longer.
You need to hit it 35-40 yards longer on the driving holes just to be equivalent.

Hazards are not hazards on tour. Players aim for bunkers. Their bunkers are nicer than municipal fairways. If they put more sand and made them less compact, resulting in plugged or bad lies and actually make them a penalty it would help. Rough is not a problem with strength and conditioning. You need to bring water and tree lines into play for a real penalty. Problem is making these courses tour proof would make them impossible for average players. So members would be miserable 51 weeks a year for the tour fans to be happy four days out of the year.

It could easily be done with Youre fricked primary rough like Shinnecock or other Opens have had, you're only option is to pitch out, if you can find it
