At this point you have to assume that his struggles can be blamed 99% on his mental game. There’s no way he can hit it this poorly when he’s practicing or working with his coach. Through 11 holes today he hit 1 fairway and 1 green. From guys I know that have played a lot with him he was always a solid golfer but wasn’t one of the top guys and they never would’ve seen him with much of a PGA tour career. They all say he just got hot at the right time and played the golf of his life and would never be able to duplicate it.

That’s my guess. He already hit his peak

Didn’t he get a wrist injury and not hasn’t been able to duplicate the game? I don’t think you get into the final group of the Masters on Sunday by some fluke performances. That being said I don’t think he returns to where he was before.

he had a solid front 9 yesterday and then absolutely blew up from there.

he hasn't made cut since 2019, so hasn't made any tournament money. I assume the sponsorship money is drying up. at what point does he call it a career?

My heart goes out to him. I'm sure it is a hard situation to handle. However not many people in this world win a PGA tour event and play in the final group of the Masters on Sunday.

I wish the best for the guy but it's obvious a playing career isn't in the cards anymore. It happens, people have good seasons and then fall off the planet. I give him credit for continuing to try and find it. He's handled himself really well and has a great personality and hopefully can stay in the game by doing TV or something.

I looked at his Shot Tracker this morning. Holy smokes, his tee shots are off the planet. Seems like that’s the part of his game that’s killing him. Hope he gets it turned around, go Tigers.

These types of situations are legitimately hard to watch. Very similar to a minor league pitcher still trying to get that call again

CSB I was in a management class group with Smylie, and he was the only one that cared besides me so I was always pulling for him.

My good friend Steven Bowditch had the same thing happen to him. Had a tough time getting a diagnosis for a vertibral fracture. Surgery was done and he started playing again on the Korn Ferry tour (he's won twice on the PGA Tour). Lost his game and now doesn't even play anymore. Was going to come play in the member-guest with me and called last week and said he would love to come but doesn't want to play golf any longer. Sad situation.

That dude went from being a good player to not being able to break 80. I remember his struggles.

Luckily for him his hot season was at the perfect time and now he’s best buds with many of the current elite / most popular players in the game. I’m sure with just those connections alone he can find a lucrative career somewhere in golf even if not as a player

As I’m sure you know, Bowdos problems were a lot more mental than physical. He’s struggled with severe depression for a long time. Crazy as he’s one of the most liked guys on tour. He was hitting it phenomenal a couple years ago at Cartersville and couldn’t bring it to the tournaments.

Very aware of his struggles with depression. He's fought that and is happy now. Little one has changed a lot in his life. We played last fall at Las Colinas (where he won the Byron Nelson) and he hit it great. Guess he can't get it from the range on the course at a tour event.

His issues when he lost his swing were physical. Go back to my previous post in that he had numbness in his arms and legs and it went undiagnosed for 2 years. When he finally found out what it was and had surgery he came back and was ready to play. Now I believe it's mental and I hate it for him. Great guy

Why doesn't he just caddie for one of his besties on the tour?

Wow… I wish I could see some video… tons of his tee shots are 240-260 yards off the map right… with driver too.. wiping it? He also has a birdie on hole 2 in the first round where his tee shot didn’t even reach the fairway! 174 yards.. what in the world
