It's been 8 years since I played SM so I completely forgot the layout and quality. Saw it was $55 green fee on a weekend so figured it was at a minimum an average course. And I'm sure it's often discussed amongst the regs here so apologies if this is an old and tired topic..

In theory it's a solid layout in my opinion. Can't just cut corners and go driver/9i or driver/wedge like a lot of mid-rate LA courses so I'll give it that. But the upkeep, good lord. There were 2 holes (par 4 on the front nine DL-right and hole 18) where there just isn't even a fairway. The space is there where it should be, but the grass just flat out is not cut. Is shite maintenance routine over there or is this just early in the season type of stuff? Cause for $55 I expected a lot more condition-wise than what I got.

Normally maintenance is above average for a muni in my opinion, it has been super wet out there though, they probably have been trying to keep mowing to minimum lately.

Did you walk out there or are you just bitching? It was a slop, you can't mow when there is nearly standing water on the fairway.

It's been raining in BR since November and the course is in very good shape considering the weather.

Santa Maria has been a sloppy mess for months. They'd need pontoons to cut the grass on number 3.

Better shape than most courses right now, especially considering the traffic it gets.
Last year was a record rainfall year for days of 2+ inches. This year hasn't been much better. And it's still better than just playable.

It's because it's a course that favors a draw.
Counterclockwise course layout.

1) draw on drive, but fade into green
2) draw
3) draw on drive, fade into green
4) fade on drive, draw into green
5) =
6) draw
7) draw
8) draw on drive, fade into green
9) draw on drive
10) fade
11) draw
12) draw
13) draw
14) draw
15) draw into green
16) fade
17) fade
18) draw on drive, fade into green

Who's the serial downvoter? Haha.
Post a rebuttal if you disagree.

1 is straight but it’s better to be on the left.

2 is actually better for a fader since that’s the way the green is built.

3 is straight but if you fade, being on the right is better for a second fade since left is safe

4 you got right. Fade then a draw.

5 is whatever the hell you can do to hit the green

6 is anything. Too many people try to carry that tree on the left. That’s dumb. Too easy of a second shot to take that risk.

7 is a draw draw.

8 is straight and a preferred fade.

9 is straight and another preferred fade

10 is straight

11 is better to miss right

12 is draw then whatever

13 draw then whatever

14 draw then fade

15 straight to fade to be on the right side then draw

16 fade then anything

17 straight

18 draw fade but draw draw is okay because of the protection of the hill

Of course, you can change things up based on your own preferred shot shape. But I don’t think this course helps one shot shape over the other overall. Plenty of trouble on either side and plenty of left and right DLs.

ETA: I’m not the downvoter.

To be fair, I hit a nasty “fade”/cut/slice when I lived in BR. I need to play it again.

Dear lord y'all make golf complicated.

Big cut on 4.

Try and hit a straight ball everywhere else.

What’s a straight ball?

Aim down the middle of the fairway, ball goes slightly right to left or slightly left to right... Both are playable.

The big issue at Santa Maria has been rain. Since December 2nd, carts have been off path < 10 days. If they get a long patch of dry weather, the course will really look good. Despite this, work is being done. They have dredged the pond right of #10 green. There will also be some major work done along some fairways and greens as well.
Remember, Santa Maria is now 30 years old so it needs some work.
Still, it’s a great track and it has some good folks working there.

BREC could sell SM and pretty much pay for revamping all their other courses.

It’s a Trent Jones design and you just know that with the neighborhood, some private owners would snatch it up and turn it into what it always should have been. Which is the best public course in BR

Disagree here.
Remember, Santa Maria started out as a private course and never made it to opening day.
Especially now, the golf course business is tough. Baton Rouge has lost 4 clubs and 1 public course in the last 10 or so years. Santa Maria in the hands of anybody but BREC would not make it financially.
And...Santa Maris is the only public driving range in town.
