In his Pebble Beach press conference he said he would refuse a special exemption should he not qualify for the US Open. Has no interest in a sympathy spot.

Said he expects to qualify and if he doesn't then he doesn't deserve to be there.

Also said he has no interest in playing the US Senior Open and winning it wouldn't mean anything to him.

He's currently ranked 72nd in the World up from 86th after finishing 3rd in Saudi Arabia. He has to be in the top 60 either the week after the PGA or the week of the US Open to qualify. The only other options to qualify are to win The Masters, PGA, or Players.

I respect that.

Ouch. Probably didn't need to say that.

I assume he's not going to go through sectional qualifying either?

Didn't say one way or the other what he would do if it came to that. Seemed pretty confident he won't have to.

I could see him going through sectional. It is the most democratic tournament. OWGR is only one way of qualifying. Going through sectional isn't taking charity.

Why doesn't he just win the Masters?

I take it as Phil, soon to be 50, feels he can still compete at a high level on the regular tour and lapping the field at a senior tour event would be a cop out on his part.

I get his point. With his career, I'd be perturbed if my first US Open win was a Sr US Open. It's like breaking 80 or par for the first time playing from the ladies tees or making a hole in one on a mulligan. It'd be cool, but it wouldn't mean nearly as much as the real thing. And it could torment you, I guess.

It would definitely be like winning the consolation bracket.

I get that, but that championship means a lot. He shouldn’t say it’s beneath him. He should’ve just said that he feels like he can still compete on the PGA Tour and left it at that.

This is a dig at the USGA feels like. Take this with his comments that they are the only professional sports that are governed by an amateur body and it feels like an FU to USGA.

If he eventually warms up to the Champions later in life, he will change his mind.
