I played golf in Tennessee Saturday. I played solo and was paired up with three New Jersians.. They were cool and their skill level was on par(pun intended) with mine..

Was just wondering if anybody had any funny or crazy stories playing with strangers…

It was the first time I have done that as I’ve been playing a couple months now after a 15 year hiatus

Got stuck with three older men when I was a teenager - I played every day back then.
They were pissed about it but one of them was a real dick. They teed off first and the one guy kept fricking with me. They all hit driver and I smoked a 3 wood down the fairway past their balls. Never heard another word out of them and they quit after 3-4 holes.

Got paired up with a guy and his wife in Orlando last summer
We’re on a par 3 and the husband smokes a bird off the tee and drops it. I thought it was hilarious they were mortified lol

Not a paired with story, but my old house was on a par three. I would sit out back and watch people tee off in the evening. My neighbors let their Maltese roam and it would just go to the tee box and bark at everyone. They’d yell at me to come get my dog, but I’d just laugh my arse off as they tried to catch it so they could tee off. Makes me laugh just thinking about that.

I do it all the time and really only have a few bad experiences to share. My favorite was last year. Played with a guy I'd played with once before, mid 50s, mild mannered normal looking dude. He was/is pretty good, probably high single digit handicap. He plays the first few holes ok, then gets to a relatively short par 5, which he reaches in two and makes birdie. A couple of holes later he hits his approach into the water on 7. Goes to the drop area and chunks it into the water. He takes his sand wedge, spikes it like a football into the ground, then picks it up and breaks it in half over his knee. He then plays the next hole ok, makes par, then on 9 hooks his drive, loses it in the shite and just rage quits right there, hops in his cart and hauls arse to the parking lot.

I've played probably fifty times in the last couple of years with strangers and I'm usually anxious about it and it's almost always a really pleasant surprise. People are generally kind, down to earth, and easy to be with.

Got paired with a husband andwife once ( I presume they were married...both had rings, but they did not introduce themselves as H&W)

By third hole they started getting touchy feeling, flirty with each other, by 6th hole very handsy, at the the turn she was nibbling on ear and stuff.....they left the round on Hole 12 and I finished alone.

Awkward

Three of us was playing Glenloch Pines here a couple of years ago and the starter said he was putting a guy with us.

I swear this guy looked like a poorly dressed Hobo and his irons and vinyl bag were circa the 1970's.

I never forget his driver was a McGregor Mac metal wood with a gear design on the crown.

He proceeds to shoot a effortless 71 and he must have smoke 18 cigarettes that round.

The greens were bumpy and just punched and I swear he barely missed 3 putts inside of 10 feet.

He was a pleasant guy and he could pure some iron shots with those worn out Hogans.

We still talk about him . It was quite the experience.

Cousin and I got paired with David Duke at City Park West Course years ago. He had a big hat and sunglasses on and introduced himself as Dave. He hit the ball pretty well but it was awkward when he asked where we were from. When I told him he said “ya’ll had a helluva football team this year, but so many n words”.

Reason #1 million why I love golf. The game connects you with so many different people from all ages and backgrounds. Had the pleasure of playing Regatta Bay in Destin a few weeks ago and got paired with a complete stranger. Mrs. Ella is a retired Filipino woman that spends most of her days traveling the world to play famous golf courses. She had on a huge visor with PGA national on it and a bright flower dress. She was the self proclaimed “Donald Trump of Florida” and made millions owning and selling real estate. She loved to tell me how much everything costs. She has only been playing for 7 years but loves the game. She plays the most forward tees imaginable, plays 2 balls per hole (her strategy was to play 36 holes for the price of 18), and mostly hits her 7 wood. She helped me with picking out targets on some of the holes and would tell me “concentrate!” I showed her how to hit a bunker shot and she even put some close to the flag. I also shot one of my best rounds of the year with an 80. It was one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf I’ve ever played.
What a game we play

I’ve only had a couple good pairings.

One group was a group of friends that were like mid 40’s Florida car salesman type trash on a buddies trip and they were bumping rap and dropping hard r N words left and right. They weren’t very good, but it was entertaining as hell.

Then the next day I got paired with a little Asian guy that walked 9,XXX yds according to his push cart in mid July and never broke a sweat on his way to a sub 80 round. He laughed at me because I was sweating like a dog in the cart on like Hole 8. Said something like “hahaha big boy you so wet”.

I try to get early tee times when I’m alone. You’ll usually be paired up with good people if you’re early. Not necessarily the best golfers, just not dumb asses. Not like I’m a stick or anything anyway, I just respect the game and know when to pick up and go to the next hole when I’m blowing up on a hole… Also, if you want to play alone and you’re on the first tee time, get to the first box 10 minutes early. If the starter can read between the lines, he’ll let you rock on by yourself. Great feeling.

Only kinda funny one I have is when I got paired with a husband and wife.

They told me they had been golfing for years, and that they try to get out to the course once or twice a week.

The wife couldn't advance the ball more than 30 yards at time. It was brutal.

Obligatory got paired with an old guy, probably in his 70s. Shot around 80 on a pretty tough course hitting just about every shot straight as an arrow.

I got paired up with an older guy one morning who had the worst looking swing I have ever seen and a hit a massive slice on the first tee. I thought he was a straight up beginner and this was one of the first rounds he had ever played. The swing looked like it hurt him.

The dude shot a 69

I always tell myself to accept a partner when the Marshall asks and I’m glad I do. I always enjoy the company even if I don’t seek it out.

But one time was unlike any other. My buddy and I were paired up with someone who said they were a scratch golfer at Doral who was there on a bachelor party. He was talking shite about the rest of the groomsmen who stayed out late to drink and passed on a tee time at Doral.

He was strait laced and living up to the “scratch golfer” title until the back 9. At some point he went to pee in the bushes and we looked over to see him ripping a line off his finger. Dude became a wild card for a few holes til he pulled out a joint a couple holes later. He was legit for awhile and I was here for his vibes on the back 9… didn’t mind any of what we saw tbh. But he went from scratch golfer to Wyndham Clark at the open in the blink of an eye. We were here for it

No crazy stories but I always travel with a few LSU coozies when I plan to play solo rounds where I expect to get paired up and at the end of the round, I give whoever I am paired up with one of the coozies. Eventually, LSu sports comes up in small talk when we talk about where we are from, interests, etc.

ETA...99.9999999% of the time I get paired up it's when I'm traveling. Last week at Peninsula I got paired with a kid who played golf at Miss State. he got an LSU coozie and an LSU ball marker. On the first hole he was using a tee to mark his ball and I asked if he had a marker. He said he left it so I let him "use" mine

I've been playing for about 6-7 years now, and have gotten paired up with strangers at least 20+ times and only had 1 "bad" experience. Old guy who took himself way too seriously. I had music on my phone pretty low with no speaker, no obnoxious rap music or heavy metal, he asked me to to turn it down which I completely understand & respect so I did even though we weren't in the same cart. He claimed to be 8 handicap, but shot like an 89 that day according to his scorecard which I didn't even completely trust nor would I usually give a shite since were weren't competing or betting, but just the way he was rude all round. Talking bad all day about the course blaming his shots on it, the wind, the people behind & in front of us even though it was a comfortable pace. I'd give him the complementary "good ball" when he earned it yet he'd seem disgusted I even spoke to him. Literally wouldn't acknowledge any of my shots, good or bad, other than the few times he'd say something about hurrying up even though we couldn't because the group was in front of us.

Getting paired up even locally whether locally playing solo or two/three of us getting paired to make 4 is usually quite nice. Have ended up meeting someone in my neighborhood I had not idea lived there, have met people who work at the same plant, hell I've even met a cousin I didn't know about lol.

When traveling and getting paired up is fun too. Met some solid people and have had some really enjoyable rounds. From couples, to families with teenagers, to 70+ year old men or women, and a couple of buddies just out smoking weed and hitting golf balls it has been a pleasant experience 99% of the times.

Been paired up a lot but never with anyone that I've questioned why am I even sticking around.. All have been pretty normal people.. My daughter and I got paired up with this guy from Mexico City while we were in Disney last summer...and dude was unreal good.. To the point he was giving us lessons towards the end of the round.. And we're both near single digit handicaps.. Granted he shot a 67 that day..

The two worst experiences I've had was when I first got into golf and a buddy took me to Santa Maria and of course I have hand me down clubs from my uncle and no real equipment to speak of.. But I want to play and we got paired with a couple of Uber douchy fricktards that wouldn't shut the frick up.. Finally one of the asshats I had enough of .. dude made a snide comment about my shoes and that was it... Got in his face, nearly came to blows, my buddy just told them it would be best if they just played on ahead and they left.. Gawd I wanted to wrapped my club around his face...

A couple years later.. same buddy and I plus another couple of friends are at Sherwood
CC and I've definitely improved and while I still wasn't great.. I could break 100.. long story short driver was just not working that day it was packed and we had this old group of guys behind us playing pretty quickly to the point they were watching our tee shots.. made a horrendous tee shot as they watched.. they laughed and then the old black guy in the group essentially heckles me for the next 3 holes.. telling me I should look into truck driving school... Needless to say that shite wasn't helping at all and I boiled over.. words were exchanged.. I probably said some inappropriate shite and never returned to that course..

Yet here I am to this day still playing...

I know... CSB & TL;DR
