The days of hard pan and super tight lies are approaching us fast.

Even the bunkers will get packed down somewhat.

Lets say a tight lie over a green side bunker to a tight pin for example. What wedge and what bounce are you most comfortable with ?

I am currently using a Ping Glide 3.0 58* with 10 degrees of bounce with a 20% success rate of being inside 10 feet.

I do use a TM Hi Toe 60* 10 degree bounce on occasions as well with similar results.

I do lay these open sometimes when I am feeling confident about not chunking it into the bunker.

9 hcp for reference.

I’m using a 58M vokey for those type shot. When things get real hard, I’ll go to a RTX4 low grind but the leading edge is to sharp with the lack of bounce on anything but truly hard as a rock ground. Otherwise I just dig every time, hence why I bought the vokey with a little more bounce and more rounded leading edge

I've played golf for 30 years and don't have a clue what you're referring too. But maybe that's what's wrong with my short game...

Different wedges have different bounce that can affect how it interacts with the ground. Titleist Vokey probably has 6 different 56 degree wedges, each with different bounce and grinds.

56* has 3.
58* & 60* have 5 in the Vokey SM7's.

I don’t understand all the bounce stuff, but that’s probably because my short game isn’t great

I believe that the wedge grind is more important than the alleged bounce angle. Just because a 60° wedge states a low bounce, doesn't mean it will necessarily be easier to hit off tight lies. I'm currently using a Callaway Jaws 60° with the X grind, that's much easier to hit from tight lies than my previous MD-3 60° wedge, even though the listed bounce is higher.

Probably need to experiment with different wedge grinds based on your turf conditions.

I'm going to my 56* 8 bounce here. Open it up a bit and just try to give myself a putt at it.

I have the Ping SS grind on my wedges now. Maybe I should move to the TS grind ?

Bounce is just the angle from bottom of club to the leading edge of the club.

It allows you to miss perfect contact and still make a good shot.

I think different wedges should have different grinds, so you can always have a wedge to play whatever conditions you are presented. So I wouldn't play the same grind in all my wedges.

I play almost every short game shot with a high bounce 58* wedge. I try to use the bounce when I pitch the ball from the fairway.

That said, if I have to pitch from hard pan, I'm fricked. Usually, you'll be able to bump a hybrid or an iron from that area.

Jack Nicklaus said, “I would rather be great with 1 club than good with a few.”

Translation- Pick a wedge and learn to hit it off every lie. I did this and my short game is super strong right now. It’s used to be a weakness. I like a lot of bounce. It will hide your mistakes.

Use the 58 but play it back in your stance and close the club face a couple of degrees. You've the reduced the bounce about 4 degrees, still have about 54*, contact will be much easier. Aim right just a little to compensate for the closed face, but you'll be amazed at how good your contact is. Of course you'll need a little green to work with.

I like the idea of different grinds on wedges.

I use to have a original Ping Eye 2 lob wedge that was stolen and I could do a pinch shot that would take 2 bounces and stop on a dime.

Have not been able to duplicate that shot with the many different wedges that I have owned since.

I just bought a set of MD4s with 12 degrees in 52/56/60. They work great for my game

My last two wedge sets... Hogan’s and now TM Hi-Toe both have had versions of a variable bounce. They’re ground so that if you play it back with shaft lean, it’s low bounce, but if you play it square it’s higher bounce. I’ve enjoyed this versatility and it’s made my short game better.

I’ve learned to use more bounce though, even on tighter lies and I hit fewer chunks and skulls than I did when I used to try to smash down on everything.

So when you say that you learned to use the bounce, are you sweeping it or hitting down on it ?
