It amazes me how many tournament hopes die on hole twelve at Augusta

Obviously Jordan a few years ago, and Cam Smith with a double today basically ending his hopes. We can all name others, over the years a ton of players tournament hopes die with a water ball on 12.
Look I am no pro and I’m never going to claim to be near the level of these guys, but it is mind blowing how many of them put it in the water on 12. It seems like the prudent play is just to hit a club that would get you to the back bunker, if you do that you have a good shot of it getting caught in the wind and you wind up on the green, or you get it all the way to the bunker and these guys are all incredible out of bunkers. So many of them I guess try to get the number perfect and splash. What’s funny is after they hit it in the water, most of the time they hit their third shot over the green anyway, just do that the first time!
Like I said I’m no pro but it doesn’t seem like that hard of a shot, take an extra club and try to fly the green!
ETA: Edited to fix my confusing title!

I said it in the game thread but ask both Tiger and Jack and they’ll both tell you the same thing about 12.
Forget the flag, aim between the two bunkers and hit the middle of the green.
And time and time again, we see guys try to be heros and go at that right Sunday pin. It’s insanity

But yes, that hole can be diabolical

Still don't know how Couples ball stayed up on the bank when he won.
The 12th giveth and taketh away.

I get what you are saying but I think it is one of those things that looks a lot easier than it is.
The green is only 20 feet deep and there are usually swirling winds in that area.
If you hit it into the back bunker there is water on the other side of the green that is running away from you. They may be pretty good out of the bunker but no one wants to be in that bunker.

Tiger made a 10 out of that back bunker in 2020. That back bunker is no easy shot.

Not an easier shot but better than in the drink.
And really you’re right, the better shot is what Scottie did and hit it deep left to leave yourself a long chip with a lot of green to work with

It’s a stock 9 iron, there isn’t a club pro I know that can’t hit that shot in their sleep

Birdied the facsimile of the hole at Tour 18 in Houston, not with a stock 9 though. Parred it out of the back bunker the second time I played it. I've played harder par 3's at the quad.

Yet the best players in the world continuously hit it in the water there year after year. Maybe there's a little more to it than just a "stock 9 iron."
That's the greatness of the design of the hole. You stand on the tee thinking it's an easy shot, but there is actually very little room for error. Right handers especially can't miss much at all because their misses are usually short right or long left. Throw in the swirling winds, and you get situations like Molinari, Koepka, and Finau all hitting it in the water on Sunday like in 2019.

This right here. You have to get it over the water and the front bunker, but then it needs to land within 20 feet or it goes over the green into the back bunker or even worse, the bushes where you won't be able to play your ball from. It is a very tough shot and is proven every year to be a difference maker.

I think you missed the CPG reference.

Cam was down 3. He was going straight at it to try and birdie the hole knowing that Scottie would play for par.
He made a terrible swing but he had to be aggressive there and go for the risky shot.

Best par 3 on the planet and one of the best golf holes in general in the world.

The wind is why that hole is difficult.
Big elevation changes around 11 green and 12. Also half protected by pines.
I stood on 12 tee for 30 mins this week and the wind changes directions about every 20 seconds it seems.
Very hard to guage. Obviously.

all of this. It's also hard to gauge what the wind is doing because it's very different at ground level and where your ball is going to by flying. That's why you see so many players trying to look at the top of the trees and not the flag. But you're 100% correct that the wind is what makes that shot so difficult

#12 took out all of the best players in the world in contention except for Tiger in 2019. It was unbelievable TBH.
