Smith said it was one of the worst swings of his career I think its an intimidating tee shot and the tiniest error leads to a really bad result.

Honestly I thought Smith completely mishit his tee shot on 17 in the Players he just got lucky as shite and his mishit was right at the flag.

Yet the best players in the world continuously hit it in the water there year after year. Maybe there's a little more to it than just a "stock 9 iron."

Nah, it’s a breather hole. They just must not have the tummy for it

If they can just get the “angles” of Jerry Brownlow with the “flip and stab” of Hal Frontier, it would be a simpler shot.

Have to create “violence.”

Need to have a better pre-shot thought like “backwards momentum of the body equals forward momentum of the golf ball.”

I thought the same when he hit it on 17. It was the same miss. He got lucky at TPC because he was going left of the hole. At Augusta he was trying to attack that pin and a miss right was dead.

Cam was down 3. He was going straight at it to try and birdie the hole knowing that Scottie would play for par.

He made a terrible swing but he had to be aggressive there and go for the risky shot.

The young man played to win the tournament, but hit a bad shot. I admire him for not taking the safe way out.

I get what you are saying. No professional is going to look at that distance and say “no that’s too hard im going to hit it in the bunker

They are going to think they can hit that number and then I really think the wind screws them. They said 12 is the lowest elevation spot the course so you can’t feel or judge the wind properly on the ground. When the green is 20 yards deep a slight shift in wind will make or break you.

That’s why victor hovlands low shot was working so well

Cam Smith is one of us. He plays hero golf and I freaking love it. Also can be chaotic off the tee.

The wind just mind fricks them. When I was watching Saturday, they panned out and showed the flag in the 11 green blowing one direction and the flag on the 12 green blowing the complete opposite. It’s a difficult hole without wind because it has a small margin for error, but add swirling unpredictable winds to the equation and it makes the hole infinitely harder because they’re so dialed in with their distances and trajectories.

Watch his 6 birdies after that while you're at it.

green angle for righthanders

This is the main issue (aside from the wind) in my mind. A slight miss to the right may be pin high, but it ends up in the water because there is no forgiveness on the slope.

Th shaved slope also plays into it as well, as the mind sees ground but that ground is actually a ball that ends up in the water.

If Jack and Tiger say the proper way to play the hole is to "take the safe way out" then I listen to them.
