How long did it take you to build a solid repeatable swing?

Have put in about a year of lessons building a good swing and while I have made huge strides I still have the occasional days where my swing is just not working due to old technique and new technique fighting each other. How long did it take you to get a solid repeatable swing that you still may tinker with but for the most part stick with. Shooting low to mid 80's on a good day upper 90's on a bad day.

There's a saying that you never show up to the course with the same swing. There's probably a little truth to that.

Of course, the major swing aspects may be there every swing or every round, but the tiny details of your swing may be inconsistent for us amateurs.

I play best when I keep the major swing points (head down, balanced feet, right elbow tucked, grip, don't swing hard, commit to the shot (confidence), etc) in my head and just relax. I guess that's considered a repeatable swing.

I can see and feel my swing in my head before I swing. When I do that is when I play my best golf.

Everyone gets to that point in their own time. And occasionally, once you're there, you'll leave and come back. A couple years ago I played 6 months with a bad slice. I just happens. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged

Maybe my expectations are too high, with all this work I would have hoped to be touching single digits by now. Have had days where half a round had me on pace for a sub 80's round and then one blowup swing flaw derails the round. Really just want to get to the point where my good days and bad days are within a few strokes but that might be wishful thinking. Lessons continue.

You’re at a point where technique isn’t failing you, but strategy is.

Learn to play smart to avoid those blow up holes.

A young lady tied for the lead at the Women’s Open hit back to back shanks yesterday.

I just hope I can stay engaged in the round and make a few good shots to enjoy.

Golf is hard.

When I play well, I don’t think about anything. When I struggle, I’ve got a million thoughts and movements.

Maybe, however, expecting yourself to take a good grip, a good stance, good posture, and good aim is realistic.

Focus more on inputs than results. If you get the setup correct, you’ll swing better more often. Scores will go down.

I missed a couple of 4 footers yesterday. One I took a good stroke, but putt did not fall in. The other one I took a putrid stroke. The first is ok, the second needs attention.

15 years and still have bad days. My key to success: work on your short game. If you can just get it around the green, with a decent short game you should stay in the high 80’s on a bad day.

50-100 balls a day into a net. Although some times I think that's a bad thing since its hard to tell a good swing from a bad swing into a net.

Lessons every other week.

Strategy isn't typically my problem. I play very safe. Played yesterday and my worst three shots were iron shots from the middle of the fairway after perfect drives. Irons have been my downfall for a while. Pre-lessons 5/10 were bad shots, post-lessons 2/10 are bad. By bad I mean off by 30 yards usually right.

Luckily my short games saves me if I can get close but I should not be mishitting an iron shot from the middle of the fairway.

Average proximity by a Tour player from 125-150 yards from the fairway is almost 25 feet.

I’m in the same boat.. I’m looking into buying a launch monitor and a tripod to video myself.

This is my next big purchase because the net scares me. Don't want to hit 100 balls I "think" are good only to find out they really were not.

Probably more difficult to repeat when you use a different set of clubs every time you change underwear.

God damnit…why did you have to throw this in here. This mentality is what kills people on a golf course. Are you a touring professional? Do you do nothing other than practice golf for 10+ hours a day…why shouldn’t you mishit an iron from the fairway?

Just put the best swing on it you can and let the results happen, you can’t control the outcome, only the swing. The more you focus on that the better off you are while playing. And if you do mishit the ball, even in the middle of the fairway, all you have to worry about is the next swing so don’t dwell on what already happened so you can get better.

I sound like mr cliche

BeaverPro has some good advice but I certainly understand your frustration. I have that same thought all the time - hit a beautiful drive into the center of the fairway and it’s right there in front of me and I skull the iron or hook it. One bit of consolation I would offer is if you’ve only been taking golf somewhat seriously for a year and are already having some rounds in the low 80’s, I’d say that’s pretty damn good. I know many people (myself included) who have been at it for longer than that and haven’t gotten to low 80’s.
