re: How good do you need to be for the type of ball to REALLY matter?

Total golf potential really requires competence with the driver. It just does. You can’t finish a hole IF you can’t get the ball in play with a chance to get on the green frequently.
Putting, chipping, and pitching are important for getting the most out of the good drives and approach strikes. A good short game can make a 6 into a 5 or a 5 into a 4, but a great round of driving can set up more GIR which will lead to lower scores.

This, this right here, you’re very good at putting my thoughts into words. It doesn’t matter if you’re Seve around the green if it takes you 5 shots to get there.

Yea, is that bad or something? I felt pretty good about that 73
I around a 5 right now but have broken 70 multiple times. Do you just fire off 77s nonstop?
To answer your OP, yes, the ball 100% matters.

Seems like it, I live in that 76-82 range and rarely go above or below it. I guess I’m boring

I've found the Titleist AVX to be the perfect balance between price and playability. It's the closest thing to a ProV but at a lower cost. I get the pristine ones from lost golf balls. Com. I'm a 2 handicap and it gives me the distance and spin that I like. Played Pro V's for years and years.

I agree with you. I think the main requirement for judging one ball vs another is consistent ball striking, which the vast majority of recreational golfers, probably 90%, don't have. I generally play public courses and I get a kick out of guys playing Pro V1s who can't break 100, but go on and on about spin, etc.

Give the Maxfli tour our tour x a try. They sell them at Dicks and Golf Galaxy, 4 dozen for $109. There is a PGA tour player that uses them and Lexi Thompson on the LPGA does too. It's a premium feeling ball with good action without the price.

Are Maxfli balls urethane? They’re 4 dozen for $109 right now.
I’ve been using them and love em.

When asked about how he four putted a hole at the Masters, Seve replied:
“I miss, I miss, I miss, I make.”

The ones that say “tour” are.
That’s a great price.

If this is true you shouldn’t be losing enough golf balls to where this would be a major budgetary concern for you. As expensive as this game is across the board, saving $20 spread across several rounds of golf is not worth losing the performance advantage of the best ball for your game.

use Tour Response by TM.
This is a great ball in the budget tier,
But…

don’t have the swing speed for ProV anymore.
My Golf Spy did an extensive data driven study on this over multiple years now. This is a myth. Almost everyone gains performances benefits from the best tour balls on the market. People who play a “softer” feeling ball because they think it goes further for their lower swing speed are almost always wrong.

Ball absolutely makes a difference. Spin affects launch and flight.

Swing speed and launch makes the difference, not handicap. It matters for everyone.

I’m a scratch golfer and I choose the ball I play based on how it reacts on pitches, chips and putts. Full shots don’t make that much difference to me.

Finding the right balance of of the two is ideal but I would focus on the driver and approach first, then fine tuning it to short game.

If you're not floating your golf balls in epsom salts and finding the light side of the ball then you're just wasting your time on the course.

As long as it's not a top flite ....

Haven't tried these yet, but they are next on my list to try.
Vice Pro+ is what I have been using a good bit. About $36/dozen is a mid range price point. I find I get both decent distance on the ball as well as spin & check around the greens. I've seen several controlled tests done where they have the robot using high/mid/low swing speeds with drivers/irons/wedges and the Vice Pro+ consistently ranked near the top out of a ton of different balls that were tested.
