Getting to the point where everyone I play with is over 50 and some over 60. I never gave it much thought earlier in life, but now there's a real discussion about this and even the thought of different tees within the same group. Do you choose a yardage? Rating? Ever mix?

I was just alerted to the new score cards at Oakwing that have a a mixed setup with some holes from yellow and others from blue. That was a pretty cool set of tees because it made the long par 3s more manageable. I can remember thinking of this conceptually long ago, but it didn't seem like anything one would want to do since it was a "made up" course.

Avg 5i distance x 36 and I play the tees closest to that unless someone in my group is adamant about playing from closer. I won't play further back unless required in a tournament.

Always play as far back as they’ll let you.

I'm not especially long off the tee (probably 240-260) so I enjoy playing the whites a lot more than struggling from the back tees.

Pretty good guide here from the PGA and USGA for selecting tees based on avg. driver distance.

Also with the combo tees, if the scorecard and GHIN app has a slope and rating assigned to them then they’re a legit set of tees and have been re-rated by the USGA. It’s different from just going out and playing from wherever you feel like.

My regular group has a 60 year old, a 46 year old (me) and two others in between. We all hit the ball roughly the same distance on our normal/best shots. Most of the time we play the one ups. Never the tips. If conditions warrant (very cold, super wet, etc), we'll play the two ups.

This is a good guide. I usually will pick the set of tees closest to 6400 yds. I have played several places with the combo tees and find they are a good idea; usually the big difference is the par 3's are shorter.

I'll have to check on that Saturday. I cannot find an updated pic of the scorecard online.

This seems to work out for me too… Around 6500.

Requires great drives to have a shot at going for most par 5’s with a 3 wood or hybrid. With good drives on par 4’s, it provides a diverse range of approach shots (don’t have a wedge into every green). Par 3’s, rarely more than a 5 iron.

We try to hit the 6200-6500 range.

I'm the longest hitter in my main group. That's not saying much... the other guys are short off the tee. They like to play a little shorter. I may get lucky and hit a few 270-280.

I always assumed driver distances kind of dictated which tees you play.

Somebody averaging 230ish off the tee shouldn't be playing too far back.. would cause lots of long arse 2nd shots.

We always played one forward of the tips. Until a course abused us and we all agree to move up one more. We had one guy with us who plays from the tips and strangely he actually belongs there.

We play different tees.

It’s not that big a deal.
Everyone still has to chip and putt.

I'm the oldest in our group and when we stretch it to the max, I'm hitting rescues, long irons on some par 4's but I like hitting all the clubs in my bag. When it's wet, I move up one.

Never heard of this rule of thumb. I play the one ups at my two home courses (around 6,400 & 6,800) but could go with 7,200 with this rule. I have no desire to play the tips on those courses and most of the guys I play with want to do two up.

Sometimes I play up with them and sometimes they play back with me. Last weekend we played Tempest and they played the blues with me at 6,800 and the coarse absolutely wore them out

I regularly play mixed tees since I’ve gotten older. Most courses have it now. I really like it.

Thats tough for young athletic guys that aren’t great golfers

Would have you playing at 7,000 yards even as a non polished golfer

I’m an 11 right now and this would have me at 7,020. frick that

My group of four, 61 - 66 years old, play 2 sets of tees. Two play 6200+/- and two play 5800+/- yards. None of the group want to hit just wedges or just long irons/hybrids into greens, driver distance. Cold and/or wet weather influence choice. Also, we would like to play a round between 3.5 to 4 hours and have scores that are reasonable for our skill levels and expectations, course rating. So there are several components to our decision on which tees.

Thanks for the link.

I was excited to check the chart until I did. My driver is pretty consistently 270-280 and straight. My 140 in clubs are amazingly inconsistent and inaccurate. Chipping is the same. Putting is money when I finally get there.
Usually start happy, get pissed, finish happy, then realize I could’ve parred or birdied if I didn’t chunk a 120 yard approach shot and end up pissed again. Each hole is an emotional roller coaster.

In general, many people should play up a tee.

IF you break 80 every tine from there, move back some.

The game is hard. Distance is part of it, but I’ve 3 putted from the forward tee so it still comes down to short game for me.

At this point, even if I take a good swing(for me) it’s only going 220, maybe 230 at the course I play. I moved up because of lack of distance, I don’t score much better because of lack of ability.
