re: Has letting faster groups behind you play through become extinct?

Maintain movement of all groups when a faster group is coming through
I would argue that when the course is full, there should be no expectation of playing through. If you are on a public course Friday-Sunday, there is no point in letting a group through. All you are doing is trading places with that group. They will finish 10 minutes before you do. So, avoid the cluster of 8 guys trying to walk by each other through a narrow door and continue as is.
I say this as the guy who usually has a nervous breakdown when my playing partners are playing slow and I see a group behind us.

You must play at crap munis where they jam tee times with hackers on top of each other.
I play multiple times a week at various courses and rarely are there people on top of each other.
As stated earlier, letting people play through does nothing other than swap spots anyway. If that 8-12 minutes really makes that much of a difference to you, I suggest playing during the week or getting early tee times on weekends.

Post covid golf is an abomination.
its real bad, it has done nothing to help the game, I thought it would but it has not. A lot of things are now gone or not done, fixing pitch marks, raking bunkers, the etiquette has taken a dive. Every course is packed but I'm not sure everyone out there is actually playing golf. Some are out there just to ride around and frick off.
Nobody gave a shite about playing through years ago.

This. Every time a play it’s like they are mad i was let through as a single.
Also, I started golfing in 2019. I got one sweet year of terrible golf before Covid fricked it all up.
And YouTube.

People have been bitching about this for decades. Long before covid.

Rules? Didn’t know it was a rule.

At our club, a single has no standing on the golf course.
I am let thru sometimes, but I don’t expect it.
This was new for me when I joined my club.
First time I played with a group of older guys there was a single that came up on a cart behind us and we were a walking foursome. I said "Should we let this guy through?" One guy just simply responded no. I was like ok. The guy eventually just left and went to the front nine.
Fortunately the course gets minimal play and I can't recall one time I've had to let someone through. I play by myself from time to time but after that one instance I knew just to skip a hole or two and don't even get up on the group in front.

It must be nice to not have a constantly packed tee sheet.
Is this an exclusive/expensive private club?

It's definitely a highlight and a reason that even though I moved and I'm an hour away from the club now I'll never drop my membership. I have been a member for two years now and I don't know if ever outside of a tournament that I've seen five groups on the course at the same time. No tee times are allowed/required. I read a quarterly newsletter they send out to all the members and it said how many rounds were played and I think it averaged out to 9 foursomes a day over the course of the year.

It is. Texarkana Country Club. It's a hidden gem. I tell people all the time and they don't believe me but it's legit one of the nicest courses that I've ever played. I went on a Torrey Pines trip last year and came back and the greens at TCC were rolling better. I like to brag on my course though just because it's so underrated. If you're ever in the N LA or S Arkansas area and want to go play just let me know.

Yeah, it was for me too, but it's outlined in the golf rules of the club that Singles have no standing during busy times (weekends, holidays).
If I'm playing as a single on those days, I'm showing up when they unlock the cart barn and getting out ahead of everybody, or showing up late afternoon trying to be the last to tee off. Otherwise, be prepared to skip around, or play two balls from the fairway or around the green to burn time.
Playing as a single during the week though is easy 90% of the time at our club. During the week the older groups builds their round around lunch, then there will be a foursome here and there later in the afternoon, but for the most part it's a lot of twosomes or dads teaching their kids the game. Singles are common.

I think it’s more of an issue that the course is so packed playing through is pointless. Most likely the group you’re waiting on is also waiting on a group ahead of them and so on.
