Has letting faster groups behind you play through become extinct?

I've been playing golf for over 20 years and this was extremely commonplace at ALL courses up until Covid. Post-Covid, I can think of maybe twice someone let me play through, even when I'm playing alone.

What gives? New people picked up the game during covid that don't know the rules?

At our club, a single has no standing on the golf course.

I am let thru sometimes, but I don’t expect it.

We will let twosomes thru our foursome at a par 3, but the group playing through will take a bogey at worst just to move on.

Singles on a cart often just skip a hole and move through without asking.

It seems like we often are 2 or 3 playing behind 4 and in front of 1 or 2. We will merge if group behind is amenable.

Unfortunately pace of play is more like 4:15 on the weekend so the pro shop will not push slower groups.

Pre-covid most rounds were 3:50 or so on the weekend.

I don’t try to race around the course, but I play ready golf. If there are no impediments I usually play between 3 and 3.5 hours.

Just do it. TELL them “I’m playing through”.

Courses i play on all seem to be so packed these days that playing through doesnt make a lot of sense and slows everyone down. I just skip a hole if I need to get through someone and theres any daylight on the other side.

Private life might still include the traditional playthroughs.

Playing through has to be executed perfectly for it to not frick up the rest of the course behind the group that’s playing through.

The two times I can remember recently letting a group play through, the group behind them caught up to us while we waited on the playing through group to clear.

The end result of us letting someone through was the course getting even more backed up. We weren’t even going slow. We finished that round (with the pass through) in under 4 hours.

Definitely true. The group being let through has to make a concerted effort to clear. Limit your pre-shot routine and minimal time on the green.

I’m a pretty staunch proponent of efficient play. If there is an entire hole open in front of you, you very definitely should be letting faster groups through.
All that said, a single should never expect to be let through. Playing as a single is the time to hit three or four golf balls and get a little practice in because there will definitely be some waiting.

I play by myself quite a bit and don’t understand the people that try to rush through and finish as fast as possible. I’m out there to enjoy myself, not speed run and complain the whole day. Most of the time when people ask if I want to play through I tell them go on ahead unless I have other people breathing down my back.

When I played it was 1st tee time Sat/Sun never more than 2.5-3 Hours a round that was for 3 people or a 4th. Set the pace of play no distractions, no screwing around and done by 9:30-10 home by 9:45-10:15.
It’s not hard if everybody plays under a 10HCP and doesn’t screw around.

We skipped a foursome out at Beaver Creek post covid and they confronted us on in it 5 holes later when we were on 14 going to the green and they just tee'd off on 13 (so, roughly 6 shots behind us). I asked the old hack if he wanted to fight and that I'd gladly whip his arse and his rider urged him to move on.

we finished out and never saw them agin.

Post covid golf is an abomination.

First tee time is different.

You have an empty course in front of you.

I’ve benefitted from that slot at times, it the guys I like to play with start later.

A 1000 start on a Saturday is going to finish around 2 plus or minus 15 minutes.

I play fast. Very fast. But I play with a couple of guys that are painfully slow. Big problem is that every time I convince them to let someone play through the party behind takes their sweet time. I honestly don’t understand it.

I’m not letting anyone through if there’s no where for them to go. Find some friends/partners to play with.

If you show up without a 4some on a weekend, then pair up with others or get comfortable.

If a group isn’t keeping pace with the group ahead, they should let anyone pressing them through. If everyone is waiting on those in front of them and it’s moving, no need to let through. Play ready golf and play fast.

Yes and no.. depends on the situation if a course is packed skipping doesn’t make much sense.. empty days I’ve never really had an issue with guys letting us play through. My daughter and I play a lot of golf just the two of us and if we’re behind a group that’s slow and no one is in front of them we’ll be pretty much on their heels and that typically gets us waved up. But there has been a couple of occasions where we straight up skipped ahead without asking when there is no one in front of the group we’re following.

Now this applies pretty much at my home course only. If I’ve paid to play outside I’ll suck it up.
