Got my official GHIN

Finally got around to doing this this weekend instead of using generic apps to calculate it.
I’m officially worse than I thought I was! An app I had been using had my handicap at 19 but once I loaded all my previous score info for the year so far into the USGA GHIN app, it went up to 22!
I don’t plan on entering any tournaments for at least a couple years while I work to improve this, but holy crap! To add salt to this wound, I see that anyone who knows me can now go search for me and see all my scores
.
My goal is to improve this to around 15 by the end of 2026 (if the weather is dry, I can golf up to three times a week). I always seem to get on or very close to the green in about 2 strokes but inevitably I end up with a bogey or double with about two or three pars per round. Every two or three rounds I’ll make a birdie or two. I shot an 88 at Pelican Point yesterday, which is lower than my usual 92-96 there. I was in a good mood after that until I saw my handicap rise my three lol!
Here’s to improvement!

I have a buddy that uses some app and I swear it makes him seem better than he is. He doesn’t realize how much he’s hurting himself the few times a year he’s in a money match esp when not counting the mulligans he takes throughout the round.

Golf is an incredibly hard game to score well in when actually scoring yourself according to official rules. So many out there decide on a whim during their game what to count and what not to count lol.

If you were entering hole by hole scores into the previous app then only put total scores in the GHIN, that could explain the difference. Equitable score control prevents you from getting anything worse than net double bogey on a hole. So, the old app may have you with a 90 for handicap purposes, but you put it in as 92 in GHIN.
If that is not the case, I am not sure why the caps would be different. The calculation is not complicated and isn't proprietary only to GHIN. So, the other app should be able to calculate it. The only other thing I can think of is if they connect to GHIN and don't give an exact handicap for those that don't pay.

I actually use the GHIN app to keep score most of the time. I like that it keeps stats on fairways hit, greens in reg, up and downs, and putts. Then hit log score and I'm done.
I admit if I haven't played in a while, I'll play a few rounds that I don't log in the app because I know I'll be rusty. But other than that, most scores, even 9 holes, go straight into the app and pretty much never use the score card. I only wish it was easier to edit. I accidentally kept a par on a hole I double bogeyed Saturday as I was more focused on capturing the nightmare of putts on that hole. Had to delete the whole round to go fix it, vs. just being able to hit edit. Down to a 12.4 in just under a year back playing and hope to break 10 by the end of the year.

Play with people who are better than you. A lot.
Count every stroke and keep track of each shot.
Figure out where your're losing the most shots.
Get really good at putting speed....line doesn't matter as much for you right now.

Entering scores into your GHIN when taking mulligans
I've gotten really strict with mine and only enter tournament rounds or strict practice rounds where I finish out every putt and take appropriate penalties (re-teeing with OB and not dropping where it went out).
Played nine yesterday and fluffed a couple lies in the rough and hit a few extra putts after finishing a hole. I'm not adding rounds like that into my GHIN.

There’s nothing wrong with practice rounds like that. Top one? Who cares, hit it again and figure out what you did wrong. Just don’t put it in your GHIN unless you count the appropriate penalty.
Sometimes I lose my swing. I’m playing practice rounds until I figure it out. Some might call that keeping a vanity HC, but if I put in a bunch of dogshit rounds then find my swing, I’ll be accused of sandbagging. I try to keep it somewhere in between. If I score bad, but am hitting the ball well, I’ll enter that. If I just can’t hit a ball that day, I’m going to work on figuring it out.

I keep legitimate scores. If I'm playing with a random or something who knocks my ball back to me after I lag it to within a foot, I'm not going to give up that round because I didn't putt out the gimme and not going to make it awkward by asking them to stop. And although fairways are wide, most holes at my course are lined with houses and 90% is OB, I have started taking the rule that you can drop 2 club lengths into the fairway where it crossed OB and consider you are dropping 3 and hitting 4 at that point. Just to move things along. It's apparently an official "local rule E-5" under USGA for non-tournament play

This really bothers me when it happens to me. Like you, I am not going to say anything, but, unless you (the random) have seen me scoop those, assume I am going to putt out. If we are not playing for anything, that isn't your putt to give me.

That is definitely an official rule.

Sure. There are certainly worse things that people do and still count rounds. You can set the tone with that early on by finishing your short putt so they know you like to putt out. I started back playing competitively a little over a year ago and I realized that I was hurting myself not putting everything out. We'd give ourselves short putts during rounds and then when I started playing tournaments I would miss a 3 footer like every round. So I started practicing those a lot more and finishing putts in my practice rounds which has in turn lowered my tournament round scores. In 9 tournament rounds this year I think I've only missed two short putts.

Interesting. That's a good rule for pace of play and keeping it more realistic to an actual score instead of dropping and hitting 3 like it was a hazard instead of OB.

Sure. What I meant was that the USGA created the rule and he wasn't doing anything to improperly lower his handicap.

Assuming the rule has been adopted by the course, sure. Most public and muni courses have adopted it but most private courses have not.
I will enter scores with fluffed lies or a bunker I rake or move my ball around a little because in the end, I think it's a wash. In casual rounds, I may fluff a ball but I won't read every green on every chip. I wont walk the entire way around the ball on every putt or ensure I read the putt from below the hole on every putt like I will in a tournament. In casual rounds I may gain strokes on approach and in tournament rounds I gain more around the green but I think it's more accurate to accumulate as many recent rounds as possible to determine flight separation between people of similar abilities.
The only rounds I won't enter are ones I determine ahead of time that are purely "practice" as in:
-I am only using driver or hybrid off the tee
-Clubbing up and swinging easier on all mid irons
-Clubbing down and swinging full
Etc etc etc

This is what I'm trying to do but not having a ton of luck.
I completely suck at golf, but I'm much better than all my friends that play. Even when paired with randoms I'd say my game is as good or better than just about anyone I get paired up with (and that's not a brag. I am NOT even close to being good). I think over the last 20 rounds I've played with randoms, I can think of one guy who was clearly better than me.
Wish I could play more often with people better than me.

Just fyi, this isn't a big deal and I don't care if someone does this, but I disagree for sure here. Fluffing lies is an automatic disqualifier for registering a score. Hard to quantify how many strokes fluffed lies are going to save you in a given round. Reading the green a little longer is not for sure going to save you any strokes, but it's pretty much a certainty that if you're fluffing lies, especially out of the rough, you are saving yourself strokes.
Again, this is not a big deal at all so I'm not trying to hate on you for this and I used to do it as well, but I just disagree.

You will notice that your game/course handicap for specific courses is usually much lower than your HI.
