No, you do not need ProV 1’s to play good golf. No, you do not need the latest PING clubs to play good golf.
That sounds miserable!

What's miserble about playing well with off the rack clubs? Kinda the opposite, yes?
If you need THAT much help, your game is not in a good place.
Look at the data from MyGolf Spy. 5-10 yards difference from the top club to the bottom. Not enough to drastically improve your game.
Shot 80 or better with Spaulding irons & McGregor woods (Set 1), PowerBuilt Citation irons and PB woods (Set 2), Mizuno MP60 irons and PING woods (Set 3), and Mizuno MP20s and ST woods (Current Set).
Played Dunlop and Top Flite (when I first learned), Bridgestone, TaylorMade, Vice, Maxfli, PXG, and Titleist golf balls. Not going to make a difference for a beginner.
Bottom line, I know it's not my clubs or ball, it's me that scores or doesn't. Nothing miserable about that.

I don't get discouraged because I don't play golf to feed my family or keep a roof over my head.
It's a hobby. It's supposed to be enjoyable.
But it's also a metaphor for life. Getting upset at what you should have done is in no way going to help you in the here and now. One shot at a time.
Have fun with it. Relax. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. Keep your swing thoughts simple and few.

The only decent thing about the show Stick is Grossweiner's Law.
Can't control what has already happened, just the next moment (shot).
Live for that and you will keep coming back.
I find ways to relish in good shots on bad holes. A good putt for double, a great chip to make bogey, great iron shot after a great punch from a crappy drive.
It all matters and makes the game worth it. Every single shot is an opportunity to succeed and improve. You get 2-6 on every hole unless you hole out, keep working towards making more good ones than bad ones on the next shot and things will get better.

When i got married, my groomsmen gave me 6 lessons at Golftec
It allowed me unlimited use of their facilities for the entire duration that I was getting lessons (approx. 3 months)
I would go almost every single day for that entire period for at least 30 minutes and practice my swing
It allowed me to hit more good shots than bad, so I am able to at least enjoy myself whenever I play and not feel like a burden to whomever I'm playing with

quote:I have become so ball-bound with irons that I know I am going to hit the ball fat before I even begin the down swing. It really is the biggest reason I have basically stopped playing.
How do you stay positive even when the game is really beating you down?

Move the ball at least one ball back in your stance at setup then and see what happens.
Try on range or warming up before round.

Golf for me in a nutshell: shot 76 two weeks ago. Upper 80s last 4 rounds. It is what it is.

I was a golf pro in my early years. Now I am 55 and play my best golf. When I was 50, I remember telling my wife that maybe I am just not physically able to shoot under par anymore. I was having trouble just breaking 80. I joined my men's group at my club about two years ago and started playing every weekend. At our club, we play it down and putt out everything. I think just that competition factor has improved my game tremendously. Lately, I've been shooting below par or one or two over very consistently. My mental game has improved a lot. I used to get ahead of myself a lot, not focusing on the shot I'm playing, but instead thinking about the next hole and so on. Now I just try to focus on each shot, especially around the green. I used to hate putting because I stunk at putting. Now I embrace it more and it's become one of my stronger parts of my game. Golf is extremely mental.

I mainly look at it as I’m not being paid to do this. It’s four to five hours outside in nature sometimes alone, sometimes with new random people and sometimes with good friends.
Now do I get pissed during a round and toss a club if I’m playing bad yes, but at some point in the round I pure a iron or nuke a drive so I’m back at it.

This guy has a website named practical golf, and from all his research he wrote his manifesto. I cant tell you how much it helped me.

Lots of overlap between he and Shermans stuff. The game is so much more enjoyable when you're able to play inside your ability. Golf takes a lot of practice but with these guys I feel like Im focused on getting better at broader stuff. The course management is great after a while I realzed how dumb I was being.
