Average score by handicap analysis (Official Handicap Discussions, Questions, and Answers)

Thought this was a cool chart, many people think a scratch shoots par all the time but don’t understand your handicap shows your potential as a golfer, not an average.
Now you a plus is pretty close to shooting even on average.
Pretty cool data seeing it like this.

Also very dependent on tees. Since that determines rating/slope.

Post your bag in my thread right this minute

While it is correct that handicap is based on potential not average score per se, these numbers look a little high for the relative indexes. As Elle pointed out it is dependent on slope and tees as well.
Maybe it’s because it’s from the Grint. My GHIN is a 12.6 but the Grint estimates me at an 8-10 which I find curious.
*edit. Thinking about it they’re really not that high but maybe a stroke or so. I guess it just really all depends on the various tees/slopes.

Yes, good rule of thumb is that your average is roughly 3 higher than your cap.
There’s some interesting statistics about how often you shoot your handicap (I think it’s about 20% of the time), and what the odds are of beating your handicap by a certain number of strokes.
It’s a good way of calling bullshite on handicaps in money tournaments. When you see a 5 handicap shoot a 75, sure he has the potential to do that, though it’s probably 1 round out of 20. And when he does that multiple times in a tournament, it’s nearly statistically impossible.

Check out “ the pope of slope.”
Dude puts sand baggers in their place.
Member-guest is usually loaded with sand baggers.
I’ve shot 36on each of our 9s.
I’ve never done it the same day.
Anybody can play a great round, but when a 12 puts 5 straight 9s under 40, it’s just sandbagging.

Love that website. Knuth tells it like it is.

I guess he was worried about being called a sandbagger.

I never realized this. It is interesting info. I thought a handicap was relative to par while figuring in ratings if the course. I’ve never seen anyone say that your average score is going to end up handicap plus 2-4

This seems to be dead on with me.
I’m a 7.8 index
I seem to shoot 81-85, 9 out of 10 times
The other days might be upper 70’s or upper 80’s
If I actually worked on my short game I could drop a few strokes

What is the best way to figure out my handicap? I have been tracking rounds with the 18Birdies app, and I see it allows me to put in a cap but I need something to actually calculate it.

GHIN is the gold standard but it costs an annual fee. If you're a member at a club or your state golf association, it may be included though.

Go to USGA.org and sign up for your states golf association, around $40 for the year

Do yall post to the GHIN when you play a round by yourself and you follow all rules?
We have a weekend group but I may get a round in during the week by myself and want to count it if I play by the rules.
Im just getting back into having an official Handicap and its kind of bullshite I cant use rounds Ive played by myself.
How do people who play single all the time get a handicap?

You’re not supposed to post solo rounds. So no. But I rarely play a solo round without hitting extra balls or putts anyway.

Then how do people who play by themselves get a handicap?
Kind of a shitty rule IMO.
