I bought a cheap one today to try it out. I've been hitting my irons extremely well of late but am struggling with hitting my driver accurately. I have a couple hybrids that I'll hit occasionally but I doun't have a ton of confidence with them, either.

I've been using a Callaway driving iron for a few years that I will use when the driver is not acting right.

I'm entertaining the idea of getting a utility iron like a Srixon Z U65

Been thinking about getting one or a 2 iron. My 3 wood is basically worthless. I don't hit it near as consistent as my driver and have a 3 hybrid I hit pretty well if not needing driver off the tee so looking for a club to replace the 3w. I honestly can't remember the last time I hit it in a legit round of golf.

I've been using a 1-iron for about 30 years. Isn't that hard to hit IMO

I was testing some at PGA Tour Superstore in ATL today. The titliest 716 T-MB looks awesome and feels good when you hit the sweet spot. The Ping Crossover was easier to hit, but its ugly.

Neither is going to go anywhere near as far as a driver. But if you can hit it straight, you'll probably be in better shape from the fairway 160 out than in the trees...

Is the distance from one really comparable to a 3 wood? Or even a 3 hybrid? Talking about for the typical amateur. And are you supposed to put a graphite shaft in one? I know people who use a 2i off the tee or a utility iron that's a little bulky, but these new ones like the Ping are hollowed out.

No, when I was younger it was about 15-20 yards shorter, about 250 was the effective limit I could hit it. 230 was a good range. Can't hit it past 220 these days if I kill it but when I need to put a ball in the fairway that's what I use.

I have always used graphite shafts though, so can't really speak to a difference.

Now there are some I've seen that are heavier construction that very well might be closer to 3w length.

You couldn't pay me to use a Ping 1-iron. I had one a long time ago and if you hit it on the toe you felt like it broke your wrists.

I still use a King Cobra. Much more forgiving on a miss hit.

I would say the 2i closer to a 5 wood than a 3 wood. The 3w has a lower loft, longer shaft and more mass so it should in theory go further. I personally really struggle with 3w off the deck, so I'm not getting any benefit from it anyway. If I could hit a 2i straight and 220ish, it would be better than topping my 3w or not even trying to hit it because I know I won't hit it well...

As far as shaft, I think that would completely depend on your swing.

I have the Titleist 712U. It's 17 or 18 degrees I believe so a little stronger than a 3 hybrid. Has a steel shaft and I find them very easy to hit. If you dont have any problems hitting a long iron it's no different.

I like the idea of one, especially off the tee and getting 20 yards of roll, but I'm reluctant to give up the high trajectory of a hybrid/5wood when needed for a long approach, long par 3, or just a softer landing.

I'm thinking it may be useful on par 4s from 300-400 yards. I don't think it'll be unreasonable to be able to hit it 230-250 depending on the roll out on the fairways. I will just have to be much more consistent with it than my driver to make it worth it. Will report back once it arrives.

I have an old Cleveland that I bought for $15 used because I loved the shaft in it. One if my favorite clubs in the bag. Pound it 230-245 with a slight draw every time. Hit it on holes with trouble right, under 400 or tight dogleg lefts.

I have an OLD callaway 5w and a callaway proto-x utility iron.

The iron is the 21° turned down to play like a 2i (19°). I love the club but rarely if ever use it.

I hit them:

Carry...............Total
5w)...253y...............255y
2i).....235y...............255y

The fact that I get so little roll with the 5w is great with approaching greens and I probably hit it the best / straightest of any club in my bag. The only time that the 2i really makes sense is if I play somewhere really windy and / or really dry. Unfortunately I live and play in Louisiana which doesn't really have those situations presented.

The main time I use it is if the course is really tight with lots of trees. It is a savior for long approach from under or around trouble (like tree limbs) because it stays so low. And it goes for MILES on a slightly downhill fairway that is tightly cut or dry! Like ridiculous amounts of roll. I hit one a few months back on a really dry fairway that landed right on the backside of a downhill slope and it went further than my normal 3w (it came to rest around ~280). Shots like that are truly the only reason I still have the club. I just don't play it very often, but when I need the club it definitely saves a stroke or two.
