Anyone else hate hitting off mats at the driving range?

I swear that’s the one thing Baton Rouge is really lacking A decent driving range where you can hit off grass. Beavers is nice, and Greystone is quality most of the time too and both are a bit of a drive from BR, but Sherwood is god awful and I swear Santa Maria never lets you hit off the grass anymore. Am I the only one that feels this way?

I never hit off driving mats.
It's the best way to screw up my back.

Before a round, I don’t mind hitting a few off the mat. It’s almost impossible for a bad strike and puts me in a great mood for the round.
Sustained practice on a mat is a recipe for aching joints

Theoretically, I would prefer to hit off of grass but the quality of the grass at most ranges is so piss poor I often prefer a mat. Now, resort golf, TPC, etc yeah...gimme grass.

I suppose It’s OK to hit a driver off a tee on the mat, but hitting irons off of a mat will not give you a good indication of how your swing is because it corrects shots that are hit fat.

I don’t like it.
It is ok for a warmup, but it is not the same as grass.

I don’t mind it.
Our league played up at Quail Hollow last weekend and the damn range grass was 3+ inches thick

At good places the mats are so much better than when I was growing up. I'd rather hit off a good mat than most ranges out there these days.

Can’t correct distance. Fat will go shorter and you absolutely should know if you did

I mean I don't hit off mats very often, but i know when i hit a fat shot off of a mat..
I hit balls at Santa Maria yesterday and their mats are waaaaay better than that shite at the Legacy on Sherwood..

Not the mats that I hit off of at City Park driving range in New Orleans back in the day.
A fat shot would just bounce off the mat perfectly into the ball without losing club head speed

I have to at times. I don't like it. I don't think its give you the proper feedback. Driver , no problem but I think it kinda screws with my iron game some. But I pretty much suck anyway so there is that. LOL

I have never hit a bad shot off the mat, it makes me think I am going to have a good day striking my irons. Then I get in the fairway and find out I still suck.

I rather hit off mats than try to find a nice patch of grass in the see of trenches at our locals. Would be nice if people would learn the correct way of hitting on a range. Maybe it wouldn’t look like it was carpet bombed

I get the shanks after hitting on mats for an extended period…no idea why but it makes me very wary of mats

100% agree. Sets you up for failure on the course.
