This last one is my question. Can I just do it? Is that a dick move?

Just go ahead and pass them. You don’t need an invitation.

If a single goes in front of a group, regardless of size, and the passed group ends up waiting on the single, there are going to be big problems. It doesn't matter if the single is waiting on the group in front of him. The single essentially cut in line and will cause the larger group to finish later than expected. It just goes back to what everyone has said about crowded courses on weekends. In order for a single to be allowed through and it make sense, they would have to be allowed through by multiple groups. Even when playing through is done efficiently, it still takes time. That single expecting to play through could end up really disrupting the flow.

Golf is a heavy etiquette sport. If you are going to skip a group without the courtesy of asking, you better make sure that group doesn't see you again.

There have been times when I meet up with family out of state and we just let people play through all the time. Faster golfers should have the right of way is what I thought.
For sure, if they pass and just get stuck in front of me that’s annoying.

Yes, if there is somewhere for that faster group to go. Let's say groups are finishing every 10 minutes on #18.

Group A expected finish is 1 pm
Group B expected finish is 1:10
Group C expected finish is 1:20
Group D expected finish is 1:30.

Let's say group B let's group C play through even though there is not much of a gap between B and A. Even if done very efficiently, it may take 5 minutes to let the group play through. Now, here is how things will finish

Group A 1 pm
Group C 1:10 pm
Group B 1:25 pm
Group D 1:35 pm

So, by letting C play through, Group B essentially just switched spots since there really wasn't an opportunity for Group C to advance through the round quicker than before. Also, by letting C through, it caused a bit of a slowdown behind them. This is a very simplified situation, but it essentially explains why there is not much of a reason to let groups through on crowded courses.

True but a single still has no standing. I’ll let a single through Tue-Thu but no shot on a fri-sun

I would say 90% of the time we play 5. Rare to see 4 on our course

Agreed. I play solo all the time. People offer to let me play through, but I usually decline. Sometimes I’ll just skip that hole if it’s empty in front of them, then go play it at the end of my round. If I have a group watching me tee off, that’s almost a guaranteed double or triple.

Is it the fault of the single golfer?

I’m finding some courses that have rules: “slow Players must permit followers to play through”

This happens to me a lot on the 1st tee.. Like it would have been better for me to just pick the ball up and throw it sometimes..

It’s all situational. Nobody should be expected to be let thru on any day. My 4some gets out occasionally in the afternoons during the week. The course is less crowded, yes…but singles, 2somes etc need to learn to pair up. We let a group or two thru, fine…then two holes later another single is on our arse. We aren’t just going to sit there every 2nd or 3rd hole and let people thru.

Yea. That makes sense. I think at the end of the day, Baton Rouge just needs like 4 more courses.

Thats why I don't get why the owners of the Legacy (old Sherwood CC) don't put a little bit more effort into the range and try and revive at least 9 of the holes there.. They'd be guaranteed High School play for matches and if they'd have a fairly reasonable membership they'd probably keep a nice trac over there..

Range maybe. But it would take 2-3 million to get it playable and another 200k/year to sustain it. Just not in a good location to do that kind of revenue.

That Range is atrocious.. one of the last times I was out there the ball picker caught fire in the middle of the range....

Hell a decent investment in their mat area would go a long way.. do something similar to The Island.

I’ll be honest, one thing I’ve yet to understand in my limited time playing is the mindset of trying to rush through the course as quick as possible and rushing others.

There’s not a single person out there prepping to play the majors, and not a single person that’s on the PGA tour. Play at a reasonable pace and enjoy yourself. Those other people paid the same amount of money you did to play that course, and yes there are alot of beginners or older folks who aren’t very good and will play slower.

I try to play as a single as much as possible, but I usually try to find courses that aren’t packed so I can take my time and enjoy myself.

Most of the time, yes. Singles have no status on many courses on certain days. When they play amongst other groups, the constant playing through disrupts the entire course.

Personally I'm not trying to rush through a round by any means.. I do however like to keep a certain pace because for my game I like rhythm and when I'm waiting at every tee box for a some numbnuts that are slow AF it gets aggravating...

Also.. During the summer give me quicker rounds.. Too fricking hot to be spending 5+ hours out on the course

Yes I agree with this. I’m not really rushing at all. Just playing golf.
It’s the pausing 10- 15 at the tee. Then another 10-15 in the fairway

A few comments…

5somes: pre shot routines do not need to begin after a ball has come to rest on the green, it can start as soon as another player in your group addresses their ball in the fairway/rough. That way Player B is ready to hit once the ball lands.

Singles: Nothing aggravates me more than a single on a golf course trying to blow past people on a weekend. If I ever went play alone, I would never ask to play through a group, I would play multiple balls and stay out of sight of the group ahead of me so they did not feel like they were getting pushed.

Slow Pace: The pace of play at some courses in the area will always be slow because of certain layouts. For example Copper Mill… most people are waiting for green to clear on Holes 1,4,7,9,14,16,18. Other courses in the area that have plenty of reachable par 5’s and drivable par 4’s will run into the same issue.
