Geaux!

- free relief from tee shot landing into a fairway divot (no free relief from rough divot)

Play OB as a lateral hazard.

This would have terrible unintended consequences.

A drop out of bunker should be the same as a drop out of creek.

It’s a hazard, treat it the same.

Currently dropping out of a bunker is 2 shots, dropping out of a creek is 1 shot.

Get under a lip when they pile sand there where you cannot get either foot in the bunker.

IF it’s a hazard, it’s equal to a pond, creek, or lake- not 2 fold penalty.

Divot relief if I can get just one. That’s never made any sense to me

This is the correct answer.

But can't you take a one stroke penalty and drop it back along the line in the bunker?

This is the one. This comes in to play way more often than landing in a fairway divot, so I'm not as concerned about that one.

I read an article a while back, maybe it was the Athletic, about the OB rule. It has changed quite a bit in the last 200 years. If I remember correctly, at one point it may have been 2 strokes and distance.

Yet, you are penalized for a perfect tee shot when playing from a fairway divot.

OB - bad shot. Know where to miss.

This .

It's the worst rule in golf.

Ben Crenshaw and others have lobbied for its change for years.

All the USGA did was to create a more confusing and more convoluted version of the rule now.

I’ve considered it.

Ball was literally under lip.
A club length back the sand was piled deeply.
A drop there could be a fried egg.

It’s a hazard, and evidently is more hazardous than a body of water which is one shot to drop out.

Whats the definition of a divot? What if a small imperfection in the fairway looks like an old divot that has almost completely healed but not quite? Is it a divot or just an imperfection? Where do you draw the line?

Not a rule per se but most public courses should have a way loser definition of “ground under repair” or make local rules about being able to move your ball out of certain ridiculous lies.

I’m talking like, hard pan or cracks in the fairway, rough or sandy patches on greens, stuff like that which you see at so many goat ranches (which I play a lot of )

Is there even a definition of a fairway vs rough in the rules of golf?

Never understood why hitting the ball in the water is considered a lot better than the woods.

Simple, like all other rules, call over your playing partner and ask. Also, look at the fairway, does you lie look like the fairway? No? Drop it and go. It’s really simple and should take all of 5 seconds.
