I haven't had a gaming system since a PS4 back in 2020. I am looking to get something new to play mainly sports games, MLB the Show, Madden ETC.. I will also play a little bit of COD or Fortnite, or I used to atleast. My worry is if I buy a PS5 they will have a new system out in the next year and my system will slowly become unplayable as my PS4 did. I am open to both Xbox and PlayStation, i just want the one that will hold its own the longest.

Is there any recommendations from the gaming board?

The answer is neither.

If longevity is what you're looking for, the next console generation starts out next year.

So what your saying is I have to tell my wife she was right and I should hold off for the new gen to come out. Terrible news day

If longevity is your biggest factor you would be best served with building a pc. All of the games you mentioned can be obtained through steam or xbox game apps and controllers can be used just like a console.

Instead of waiting a year to play video games, just buy a PS5 now and if you want the PS6 when it comes out, trade in the PS5 and get the PS6.

I'm also not sure what you mean by your PS4 slowly becoming unplayable. The PS5 released in 2020 and Sony was still releasing games for PS4 in December, with software updates continuing until Spring 2026.

I looked into this, but I have zero (0) knowledge on PC's. I do have an alienware laptop that I was given for a job. It just sits now. Is that something that would be able to run games? I know you probably need more info than that, but I was told it was a very powerful laptop, just don't feel like laptops can produce enough to be a gaming system? But "I have zero (0) knowledge on PC's" so really never tried it

I didn't play it enough to keep up with the updates, and when I did do an update it seemed like I had to delete a game off my system every time to make room. It was a chore to keep up with to be able to just turn it on and hop into a game.

If longevity is what you're going for, yes.

The next XBox will play console and PC games, so it will be the best bet for what you're looking for.

Even-numbered Playstation generations are the way to go.

The jump from current gen to next gen is 2 years away and those consoles will be pricey. Depending on a number of factors, they could be REALLY pricey. Either way I can see this gen being supported longer than usual. Especially sports games and CoD . Hell Madden was still coming out on PS4 in 2024...and this is the first year CoD is exclusive to this gen systems. Covid really screwed up this gen so we are really seeing these systems shine with the best games this gen coming out now. Buy a Xbox or PS5 now and I guarantee you'll still be enjoying it 4 years from now. Just dont get a Series S Xbox. Get Series X if you go that route.

Try several at this pace. Publishers wil not make games for a very small audience. This cross gen will at least last until 2032. This one even lasted longer because of covid. About 1-2 years longer than what it should.

This is my personal opinion as a guy who is a pretty casual gamer like you. I don’t think it really matters. Both consoles are going to support the big name games for basically the same amount of time. There’s not going to be a huge reason to upgrade when the PS6 comes out because most people don’t even have the proper equipment (4K, 120Hz, etc) to utilize the full capabilities of the current PS5, much less whatever the PS6 is going to offer.

If you flip it over, you should see a model number which will help us determine how suitable it is.

Xbox has held firm to a late 2027 release for the Helix. I guess that could still change.

That soon huh... probably still behooves them to get the jump on Sony but man it just seems like it will probably be the lamest launch ever. Expensive with no exclusive launch (that arent cross gen) games if they go in 2027. The majority of my gaming library is Xbox so Im kinda ride or die with them for another Gen but Im not exactly getting excited about it

I'm not sure we'll ever see "next gen exclusives" again. Leaving too much money on the table.

That said, there have been reports XBox is committing more resources to their AAA titles to get more marquée titles out quicker, so that could be indicative of a desire to have more big name titles hit with the Helix.

I just got a PS5 last year, had been playing PS4 since 2016. You don't have to drop your old system just because a new one is out
