I absolutely hated when video game commercials started using licensed music in the background, and it's something that I still haven't come around to all these years later. It completely changes my feelings of a game in some cases.

Video games have always been very difficult to advertise in old media. You can't really show meaningful gameplay or mechanics in a 30 second tv spot or a page in a magazine.
Look back at the video game commercials/ads in the 80's and 90's, almost all terrible.
They have no other option but to try to be edgy or attention grabbing since they can't showcase the actual product properly.

It's harder to make a good commercial for a game than you would think. Only a handful of good ones each generation.

Remember watching a the Orarina of Time commercial. After I turned around to tell my Grandmaw if she doesn't buy that game then I wouldn't speak to her again.

You think they are bad now. Go watch some from the early 80s with their over the top reactions. Today they look like Academy Award winning short films compared to how bad they used to be.

Just watched an RDR2 commercial during the Bengals/Raiders game. It looked like the game was "filmed" with a potato. Not sure why it was so low res. Other than that though, the commercial seemed fine...maybe because I play video games and have played RDR2.

And also, I've never liked the addition of mainstream, licensed music added to game commercials either. It started for me when they used "No Rest for the Wicked" by Cage the Elephant on the original Borderlands commercials. I don't know why, but it just rubs me wrong.

FF7 made me get a PS1 because the commercials were so epic. Even if they did spoil Aeris dying.
