I just felt like BOTW and TOTK had far too much empty space.
TOTK was a bit better because of the semi-traditional dungeon structure, but in my opinion the heart of Zelda is: explore small area, find gadget that allows you into a bigger area, find dungeon, get new gadget that allows you to explore another bigger area.
The last two games were good, but I enjoy OOT, Windwaker, Twilight Princess, Majoras Mask much more.
They just didn’t have the heart of a Zelda game. I didn’t have any connection to any of the characters.
It felt like they built a game and then decided it would be cool if they skinned it in Zelda.

Skyward Sword is the last mainline Zelda game I’ve bought. Ocarina of Time remains the standard. I can play that game forever and never get tired of it.

To me BOTW was closer to the original Zelda than any other game. Throws you into the world and lets you figure it out your own way. TotK had a better story (and maybe the best version of Gannon we've seen, at least on par with OoT and Windwaker) than Wild but Jesus the depths were a waste of time outside of the fire dungeon.
I've loved every iteration of Zelda games, as each has been different and introduced new innovations. The 2nd is different than the first. LtttP established the blueprint for what Zelda could be, OoT blew our young minds with 3D graphics and being able to travel on horseback, and windwaker threw us on open seas. All that to say the series has always evolved, and the last generation was no different.

I might be alone in this but Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda ever. I appreciate it more and more as I get older. How they managed to pack such a fantastic world onto a tiny lil Game Boy cartridge is just beyond me.
First game with:
- proper minibosses
- unique dungeon music
- BOMB F'IN ARROWS
Hilarious dialogue. Marin is bae. The story is phenomenal. WHY THE shite AM I CRYING AT A frickING GAME BOY GAME?
Seriously. Nintendo had no reason to go as hard as they did with Link's Awakening, but they did and I love them forever because of it.
Also an unintended side effect: the screen skip glitch. My favorite glitch in any video game. Retrieve Bow-Wow after the first dungeon, do the glitch, and just wreck like 90% of the map. So, so fun.
Anyway, LOZ1 occupies plenty childhood memories too. Outstanding game, if a little dated.

Ocarina of Time is my most replayable game
I probably spent the most time with Breath of the Wild
Link between worlds is probably my most underrated Zelda game, top 3 or 4 for me for sure

This is the game that made me be interested in video games. Saw my next door neighbor playing in his garage (for some reason) and I was never the same. That would have been at least 1993 so he was playing it 7 years after it came out. Games had lots of staying power back then.

TOTK was always considered by Nintendo as a continuation of BOTW because they basically couldn’t squeeze it all into two games. 6 years is a long lag but it’s an enjoyable game

I want to say the original LoZ was still taking the top spot in Nintendo power monthly poll damn near a decade after coming out. It had another big run of popularity even when the SNES came out.

Am I the only person who thinks it is a little wild they haven't announced another mainline Zelda game yet?

This and the fact that a mainline Mario hasn't been announced has kept me from getting the Switch 2.

If we're gonna bring other properties into the thread then by all means, let's pile on.
The new Pokemon game looks absolutely horrible, graphically. This is fricking N64 level bad.

It's a cozy/life sim game, right? There's only so much to expect graphically, I'd imagine.
