Nintendo has finally provided the confirmation fans have been waiting for ever since the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - dungeons are back, baby!
"The four Divine Beasts were the dungeons in the last game, and they shared similar designs," art director Satoru Takizawa says in an official Nintendo interview(opens in new tab). "This time, the dungeons are huge and each carry their own regional look and feel, just like traditional The Legend of Zelda games. We think they will provide a satisfying challenge for players. They were certainly a challenge to develop!"
Dungeons have been a core part of nearly every mainline Zelda game, and for all of Breath of the Wild's excellence, the limited scope, variety, and number of its Divine Beasts was a disappointment for old-school fans like me. I loved the sandbox freedom of Breath of the Wild's open world, but sometimes I want to spend a few hours taking on some challenging puzzles and combat encounters, you know?
Nintendo has made some efforts to combine the two styles of play, too. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi says that "there is a dungeon that connects directly from Hyrule's surface. If you dive from the sky straight into the dungeon, you'll trigger an event. We think this will be a new experience that wasn't possible in the previous game."
Technical director Takuhiro Dohta also notes that the dungeons are "unique to their respective environments, so we think you’ll be able to enjoy the wide variety of regional characteristics." Massive dungeons built in ways that make sense for and interact with the regions they're in? Here I thought I couldn't be any more excited for Tears of the Kingdom.

Man everything that they release makes me want to play this game more and more. I just can’t see myself buying a system for me to only play 1 or 2 games.

I bought a switch just to play BoTW, I don't regret it at all.

Finally…
I can shut up about it.
Was my only REAL complaint.
Maybe they never intended for them to be in BOTW for some development reason and shelved it for phase 2.

Barring significant performance issues or some random annoying flaws, what are the odds this becomes the GOAT?

The Switch Online+ library is worth it alone.
Add in both Zeldas, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Mario Odyssey, Metroid Prime Remaster; Animal Crossing; Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Splatoon 2 & 3, etc?
It's a no brainer.

All it has to do is be every bit as good as BOTW and the sky islands/vertical mechanic could put it over the top.

quote:I think performance issues are going to be the reason people don’t rate it a 10 and the GOAT. I just have a feeling the Switch is going to have issues with pop in and frame rate. And for some reason, people will shite all over a game and ignore everything else even if that is minor

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom devs "experienced strong deja vu" because the sequel is so similar to Breath of the Wild
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom devs "experienced strong deja vu" because the sequel is so similar to Breath of the Wild
quote:
In an official Nintendo interview, producer Eiji Aonuma, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, and designer Satoru Takizawa discussed the similarities between Tears of the Kingdom and its predecessor Breath of the Wild. "The word 'déjà vu' cropped up many times during development," Aonuma explains, "we were supposed to be making something different, but the various things we made gave off a similar impression to what we'd done previously."
"But as development went on, we'd look at the game as a whole and sometimes discover that those things suddenly took a different shape because of the new elements we'd added," the producer continues, "until then, we were anxiously trying to change things up, but at some point, we realized that some of them were already as they should be."
Surprisingly, considering the gap between the two games, Fujibayashi adds: "There were many instances, even later on in development, where we struggled to differentiate the two." The developer continues, "It was a constant and difficult process where we and the development team continued to mull over and discuss until we all came to an agreement."

Very low price point for entry starting at $199 (correct me if I am wrong) and it is by far the best couch-playing console with Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Mario Party to name a few.

As I have played a lot more RPG games when my time has been freed up.
From Dragon Quest to others. I appreciate the puzzles are old school. As in, use a bow to light torches to get the cool sound. Move blocks. Shoot things to activate.
The move the ball through a large floating maze stuff wastes my time.

Fortunately, Switch games are easy to emulate on PC.

Nintendo switch has become one of my favorite consoles. I play botw, Mario kart with friends, and most of the old games they have available from nes, snes, n64, and sega.
Btw, I saw a release the is tears of the kingdom was loaded on your switch already from pre-order, it will be available to play at 7am central tomorrow.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is worth the New Release Game+ price point, especially if you've never played the originals.

You could argue Majora's Mask was an expansion of Ocarina of Time, and it's still one of the best games in the Zelda series.

Switch is the only system worth purchasing solely for the exclusives. They rarely miss with their first party IP.
Smash Brothers
Mario Odyssey
BOTW
TOTK
Those alone are worth it for me. My kids also love the Kirby games, Pokémon, Labo, and Splatoon. Our Switch has gotten a lot of mileage.

I hope this is true for people with a US Nintendo profile... I thought the only way you could play it that early was if you had purchased it digitally using like a New Zealand account.

Majora was actually set in a different location than Ocarina. This is literally the same map as BotW.
