Just a heads up for ship collectors, you can only have 10 ships so if you like to steal/pirate ships be sure to have an open slot or you won't be able to keep your prize.

how are you guys getting away with this ? I took one ship that was pretty shitty and immediately got a 61k fine

The problem was that the ship wasn't something I've skilled into yet (so at least a Class B). When I tried to enter the ship it said "Inaccessible" (first time I've seen that).

I've run across many "inaccessible" ships with Piloting maxxed out. Some have been UC others NPC. Still figuring out the deets on exactly why they were inaccessible and some seem to be set pieces to draw player to the area for some other reason.

Lately I'm getting masses of aggressively wary or territorial herd animals surrounding ships that land while surveying planets or exploring. Usually they kill the crew outside and attack me as I try to board the ship.

It could also be that they have contraband on their ships. Check the hold before going to one of the more civilized areas or make a run to The Den to sell everything out of it before registering it.

i find this is the thing im enjoying more and more.

took my star eagle and swapped out the two connecting structural components that were "Wings" and replaced them with an infirmary and workshop hab for more utility. Swapped out the A reactor to a C making it C class and added some engines and fuel. revamped the shield system.

basically have a star eagle with 500 fuel, 1500 hull and 1700 shields now.

Finally got a chance to play over the weekend on Xbox, my PC is fricked so console is my only option. I was worried about the 30fps but you get used to it. I'm focusing on the main missions like it was recommended but man the urge to go off and do other random shite is really strong . I'm almost done with the "Into the Unknown" mission which I think is the one everyone says to do before going off and forgetting about the main quest line for 50 hours.

I did take a detour to board a derelict ship I stumbled across. I blew that fricker up after discovering what was inside.

It sucks to win a battle and you can't keep the ship. I maxed out my piloting so I can keep them all. Now I don't like the 10 ship max, in Fallout I had power Armor everywhere, I want to be an Admiral and able to line up a fleet of ships for inspection.

Are you doing this on populated worlds or while off exploring? I focus on watching for landing ships while exploring. Go straight to ship when I see it landing. If it's pirates or spacers kill everyone and take the ship. I don't fight with UC or Freestar but sometimes the ship will be empty and you just have to pick the lock and take it.

To take over a ship in combat take out all of the ships except the one you want and then disable and dock with it. The Star Eagle is great for this since it's EM weapons will disable the ship before destroying it.

There are no rumors of this but I'm holding out a slight bit of hope that they expand to something like this

If Fallout 4 can have a whole dlc based on building a vault, I can see them doing something similar with a ships.

It'd be awesome to be able to make your own fleet/organization. Again, no rumors of this, only imagination of what the game can be.

Yeah the game has barely left the delivery room so there's gonna be some kinda "growth". Also hoping for this limit to rise but for now just keeping 1 A,B,C each and the special reward ships.

The builder is fun and from what I have seen swapping from an A drive to a C drive limits ya on the available C drive options as opposed to an original C at purchase/capture.

Tip for newbs to the builder: The habs and other components may have multiple options you need to arrow left/right to view. Look for the components with small hyphen sized clear icons underneath the 2x1/3x1 description.

maybe so. i think the best C drive i could find for my original A class ship had a 32 energy output which is a few bars from max and there wasnt a ton of options to choose from for C drive.

Don't forget, there are a few different part manufacturers and there's no one vendor which sells parts from all of them (at least not to my knowledge). This means you have to check out a few of them to compare parts.

There are 19 parts manufacturers:
Stroud Eklund – all-round specialists
HopeTech – habs and cockpit specialists
Amun Dunn – power reactor specialists
Ballistic Solutions Inc. – ballistic weapons specialists
Deep Core – cargo and grav drive specialists
Sextant Shield Systems – shielded cargo specialists (useful for smuggling)
Deimos – all-round specialists
Dogstar – reactor and shield specialists
Horizon Defense – weaponry specialists
Light Scythe – energy weapons specialists
Nautilus – shield and fuel storage specialists
Panoptes – cargo and engine specialists
Nova Galactic – habs, cockpit, and landing gear specialists
Protectorate Systems – cargo specialists
Reladyne – engine specialists
Shinigami – energy weapon specialists
Slayton Aerospace – grav drive specialists
Taiyo Astroneering – cockpit, habs, and docker specialists
Xiang – reactor and engine specialists

There are 13 vendors:
New Atlantis – Alpha Centauri System, Jemison
Akila City – Cheyenne System, Akila
***Hopetown – Valo System, Polvo (Hopetech)
Neon – Volii System, Volii Alpha
Cydonia – Sol System, Mars
***New Homestead – Sol System, Titan (Nova Galactic)
Paradiso – Porrima System, Porrima II
***Deimos Staryard – Sol System, Deimos (Deimos)
The Red Mile – Porrima System, Porrima III
The Den – Wolf System, The Den
The Key – Kryx System, The Key Space Station
***Stroud-Eklund Staryard - Narion system, orbitting Dalvik (a moon of Deepala) (Stroud-Eklund)
***Ryuijin Offices - Neon, Volii system, Volii Alpha (Taiyo)

***Manufacturer's direct vendor, sells only that brand (I think) and sells unique parts for that brand (I know).

The way I understand it is there are 4 primary ones, they are the ones that make everything (or nearly everything) but specialize especially in one or two things (for making unique items, I guess). The 5th one (Nova Galactic) is actually out of business so while they may be solid, they aren't going to be as flashy.

The rest make only a couple of things.

So I started this weekend and whew it's a lot. How possible is it just to play and dick around without having to do alot of customizing to weapons/ship/etc.

I kinda just wanna explore and progress the story at my leisure without worrying about all that stuff.

Yeah you can just kick it any style you want to.

Wanna be a base builder? Game has that
Wanna be a ship builder? Game has that too.
Wanna wander around basically like a tree hugging former hippy? Yeah you can do that too.
Can be a thief, a priest essentially, a cop (good or bad), a paramedic, homeless hobo with or without friends, ...

I decided I want to roll another so started kinda rushing the main quest line for the NG+ before rolling a new character. Probably hang onto this original just because he is an overall performer.

ETA: for the most available ship parts it is currently rumored to be yourself at a base pad you make. You miss the unique parts and some other kinda special to the corporation parts but get all the common/general ones.
