Micron Is Abandoning Consumer SSDs & RAM; Crucial Products Are Being Killed Off as the Company Shifts Everything Toward AI
One of the largest memory manufacturers has announced it is completely moving out of the entire consumer sector to chase AI money. Prices for anything requiring memory is already starting to skyrocket, but it will only get worse and you could even see shortages of tech products in the not too distant future.

While I think someone will move in to fill this void, it will take years.
Except for graphics cards, mid-2025 was probably the best time to build a PC we're likely to see for a long, long time. Everything was at historic lows (except GPUs). Now, prices on ram have essentially doubled (already and will soon move higher - Crucial makes a lot of SSDs, too. Maybe Samung will pick up the slack on those, but they're a premium product that will do little to hold down prices.)

Yes and no. RAM is obviously a shite show now, but back then, CPU prices (of x3D chips gamers wanted) were still stubbornly high, and GPUs were (as you said) a catastrophe. While there might be a bit of an SSD crunch, the reality is that anyone already on an NVME drive really doesn't need to upgrade anytime. Hell, I'm on a couple of Gen 3 drives and mostly shrug at upgrading. I could be wrong, but I would be surprised if this RAM fiasco hasn't softened within the next six months, even with Crucial's exit.

I would normally never advise someone not to have a backup kit of RAM, but I don’t know that I’d be sitting on 64gb of it in this resale environment

I got it for a great price last year to upgrade from 32gb, but here we are, my laziness may have made me a buck

And I get that; some people do genuinely need it. I'm simply saying it's not a concern for the overwhelming majority of PC builders, particularly gamers. And as for the markup, again, sucks. I get it. But there's a massive difference between a 350% markup on a $125 kit of RAM and a 350% markup on a $1k GPU. One is an inconvenience; the other makes building near impossible. That's all I'm trying to emphasize.

I have the same make and model in my current DDR4 build and love it. Now, again, does it suck that this kit costs 330% more than it did in August when it cost $100? Absolutely. Is a $230 swing in component pricing really the DIY apocalypse? For anyone but the most price sensitive, I would say no.

My point is a to give a direct, personal example of the inflation
I looked it up yesterday. 64GB (32x2) cost me 169.99
Now it is $906
532% markup in 3 months
THAT was the main idea of my post.

I'm lucky to have Microcenter here. You can still get a Ryzen 9X00 + decent mobo + 32gb ddr5 for like $630.

As long as RAM remains high, I think CPU and motherboard manufacturers are likely to lean into bundles. Shave a bit off of each component and people are no longer shrieking about a 300% markup and instead are quietly grumbling about a 25% markup.

The two DDR5 64GB kits I bought were $290, and are now unavailable (it was available 2 weeks ago), but the last Amazon price is $590.

Yeah paying $350 for RAM now that would've been like $110 just a few months ago is still better than paying an extra $500+ for a GPU.
Plus other things are cheaper now too. My 7600X3D was $300 when I bought it, now it's only $200.
