Finally a proper upgrade that addresses the woeful CPU tech in all of the consoles to date.

Quick Summary of Playstation 5 article:

- Uses AMD's Navi as its base architecture, not specifically using Navi.
- CPU is Zen
- Large amount of devkits have apparently gone out.
- Author suggests 2018 release of PS5 is not out of the question based on the amount of devkits released
- VR "goodies" baked in at the Silicon level.

This is pretty concrete, confirmed devkits already out to a bunch of developers. They say early 2019 is far more likely than late 2018.

The new console refresh cycle is about every 3 years now. Whether or not they call it a PS5 or something else for just an internal upgrade who knows.

Yeah but the CPU isn't bottlenecking the performance in gaming. Just the UI and background processes.

I welcome this upgrade. PS offers the best exclusives.

Edt: This is a 100% rumor article. Pure speculation based on known available hardware/tech which will be released prior. Just FYI.

Edt2: Love this piece.

How is this possible if Navi won't be released as an architecture until Late 2018? Idk of any engineering samples being sent out.

If true, this would be extremely interesting. Console seeing the next gen arch before all other markets.

I've read in the Xbone X the CPU is bottlenecking the RX580 in the console from a few places so I'm not sure that is true but didn't have any interest in the X at all so could be false. I know the Pro definitely still has moments of stutter/lag with the UI and multitasking with these shite Jaguar cores.

Obviously, just a reputable site that has been accurate with console leaks in the past more than once so a tad few more grains of salt.

Right? Wtf does that even mean? I know it's been rumored for awhile the PSVR 2 headset is coming soon which further makes sense they want to launch a new console with it to push more PSVR, but no clue what the hell that means nor can I even begin to guess or understand.

Not sure, but there are a few other places reporting that. Maybe they are wrong and it's the new 7nm Vega, that would make a lot more sense. Maybe they mean Navi features? Like how the Pro had Vega features well before Vega launched? Rapid Packed Math and FP16.

Looks like the console market is turning into the cell phone market.

The generational turn around time, alongside incremental upgrades, will push many to the PC. Ease of use and affordability were the attraction to console. I don’t want to buy a “new” console every two to three years.

This really sucks for the consumer.

I believe if you want to point fingers, you have to look at the small, albeit vocal minority moaning about a lack of 4K suport on the base PS4 and Xbox One. Then you have game developers constantly feeding the fire remarking about how underpowered the console are for the games they want to develop.

This is why you end up with games sub 1080p with framerate problems not because the PS4 and Xbox One can't produce good looking games but because developers refuse to work within the constraints of the hardware.

The base PS4 was a fine upgrade from the PS3. The Xbox One was pretty underpowered by comparison, so Microsoft felt like they needed another system to stay competitive. It just so happens that Sony was also working on another model of the PS4 that can run games at a higher resolution to look better on a 4K screen.

Problem now is that the Xbox One X completely outclasses the PS4 Pro almost to the point of making the Pro a completely pointless system unless you really love the Playstation ecosystem.

Pandora's box has been opened at this point, so I can't really blame Sony for gearing up for production of the PS5.

Late 2018 is sensationalist and won't happen. Pushing out before Christmas 2019 is probably the plan since they have no reason to rush it with Microsoft putting so much into the One X

From a hardware standpoint but not in actual usage. They are both pushing the same fps on 4k cross platform games

I thought Xbox One X games generally look a lot better and run at a higher resolution?

PS4 Pro doesn't have many games at all running at native 4K.

You might recall when SemiAccurate told you about the different console cycle of the current gen consoles back in 2013, back then we said there would be a PS4.1/4.2/4.3 etc. We also said the current gen consoles would be upgraded not replaced from the ground up, evolution not revolution. People laughed. Devs laughed. We now have the PS4 Pro and the XBox One X and they aren’t laughing.

If they are sending "devkits" out now, it could still take 2-3 years (or longer) to develop. The 2018 timeline is clickbait and I doubt it comes in 2019 either.

PS4 started development in 2008 and didn't release until late 2013

BTW, this is their "prediction" from 2013 where they base they have a track record of getting rumors right:

quote:

Even before the Playstation 4 is out there are credible rumors about its replacement that suggest Sony is going down a radically different path this time. Is the normal console life cycle dead before it even starts?

They are using that quote as proof of them predicting the ps4 pro

Release Dates of PlayStation:

PS1 - September 1995
PS2 - October 2000
PS3 - November 2006
PS4 - November 2013

About every 5-7 years. A 2019 release is pretty much on par. Not sure why some ITT are melting about consoles becoming like cell phones.
