Who is PS's competition for a PS exclusive title that is only sold digitally and only playable on the PS6?
their competition is the entertainment industry.
If you want to sell older games you have to incentivize people to buy them by putting them on sales for lowest all time prices.
noone is gonna buy an older game for the same amount as brand new games cost. it's all about the modern FOMO games. If you wanna make any money off your older library of games, you have to reduce the prices to the point people will pay for them. $10-$20 is more money than $0

Older games also now go to their subscription service too where you can play them as part of your PS Plus sub. That's the more modern way than waiting for a huge sale several years down the road. It will be playable through your sub way sooner than that for no cost if you already have PS Plus. Just look at the game list included, it's massive and pretty much all their major first party titles are on there.
They also keep raising the pricing on PS Plus and this is definitely a large reason why especially when they did a price hike right before announcing the all digital move.

This is a world class screw up from Sony. The XBOX layoffs didn't change the news cycle for them at all.

It doesn't matter. What are people going to do, stop buying video games?

I think the general consensus is there's no benefit to buying consoles if they move away from physical media. PCs have competitive marketplaces for this.
ETA: Nintendo and XBOX would be wise not to follow suit.

Sony and Microsoft have already done the math. People aren't buying physical copies.
What will hurt console gaming more is the price of the hardware, but PC gaming has the same issue right now (if not moreso).

Microsoft has made no such announcement, although I won't be surprised if they follow suit. They haven't done a great job jumping on Sony mistakes in recent years. The backlash to this might be large enough for them to notice. Would be great for gaming if they do.
Nintendo implied they noticed with this tweet, so we may be looking at a future where Nintendo becomes the gaming leader again...ironically due to Sony.

The only thing needing to be addressed is how awful Mario Wonder was and how long it’s been since they released an actual new 3D Mario game. Nintendo is the last company that needs to talk shite when they are still selling games from the lates 2010s at full price

Man we loved Wonder in my house. The wonder seed mechanic was cool.
I guess it has been a while since Mario Odyssey though. Definitely time for a new 3d Mario game.

PC has the benefit of secondary markets for parts. And with games allowing people to turn down settings, use upscalers, and frame gen tech like lossless scaling, even shitboxes can get surprisingly decent performance.

As I said before, a tiny vocal minority on social media has no actual value IRL where no one buys physical. It just doesn't matter, the sales are the sales. If the 10-15% left that buy physical are mad, boohoo, they care about the 80%+ that don't.
It's the same thing with any tech that gets phased out. Like when smartphones started removing the aux port and SD card slots because the future was wireless and larger internal storage.
Social media isn't real life.

I will stick with my Pro and just go PC and the occasional Nintendo exclusive. Until they announce a drive for my existing library I’m good without a PS6.

How many Switch 2 games are just a code in a box? I don't know about first party but a frick ton of third party games are

I honestly don't know. The only time I've ever purchased a game that was a code in a box was a Just Dance game for my kids. I was really unhappy about it, but my kids wanted it for Christmas so I got the empty box. They were also unhappy there was no cartridge in the box, and it was kind of a letdown on that Christmas morning, so that won't ever happen again at my house. That's the only time I've ever seen that on a box and not immediately moved on.
None of the first party Nintendo games I own are a code in a box. Maybe they have some out there, but I haven't seen them.
Someone mentioned Switch 2 games that are essentially cartridges that allow a download in either this thread or another thread, but that actually isn't the same thing and does eliminate most of the issues with download codes. The article that person linked admitted as much. All of the ones I noticed when I briefly scanned the list were third party games.

I’d care more about this, but I honestly don’t remember the last time I purchased a physical copy of a game.
Posted on 7/9/26 at 9:06 am to JakeFromStateFarm
I'm the same. I get the issue and hope they bring the decision back a bit, but I bought the PS5 with the disc drive just to have the option available, and have barely used it. I still have a disc copy of AC Origins, and I played it some recently. Every time the disc drive kicks on, my wife looks up from what she's doing "what in the world is that?"

It’s more about market pressure driving down prices which physical and used games do.
I but almost all my games digital but i will buy physical releases for my fave franchises like FF, RE, etc but still want physical media for those economic pressure reasons
I simply don’t want to be trapped inside Sonys walled garden. You will never see sells again.
Also they’re lying about the digital:physical ratio of their sales
The insomniac leak a while back clearly stated 45% of all games bought for PlayStation meaning 1st and 3rd party were physical
That’s been a few years so I’m sure it’s dropped so let’s be generous and say it’s 33.5%
Sonys bet is these people will just give in and go digital and the ones that don’t will be more than made up for in their new better margins and monopoly of a walled off system
Again I have been a Sony fan my entire life but frick them
frick Xbox too for being sooo awful Sony feels they have to market dominance to pull this off
