Completely incorrect. In fact, this has already happened with video games.

The most easily memorable instance for me was when Telltale Games went out of business. Some of those games are not accessible for download any longer even if you purchased them when they were listed. I only say some because I've only personally tested some of them.

In other instances, companies have delisted games if they are releasing a remaster. In these cases, usually you can still access the game if you already purchased it. If not, the only way to get the original version would be to purchase the disc from someone. That workaround will soon be unavailable for Playstations (and maybe XBox, but they haven't made an announcement yet).

What exactly is it that you think that image changes about Sony limiting disc drives due to demand?

It's like you didn't even understand the point.

ETA: You: "There was already high demand for physical disc drives before Sony announced they were going to stop making disc drives and discs in 2028. Get owned, chuds."

You look like a clown. You might want to sit this one out.

ETA: Playstation is getting ridiculed 24 hours a day at this point. Somehow there are still people here defending them.

I can tell by how violently you lashed out, deep down you realize you are wrong. It's ok buddy. The disc drives have been limited to 1 per person since the ps5 pro launch, it has nothing to do with them ending production.

Yeah, that video perfectly explains someone will be right and someone will be wrong. Who? I have no idea.

But the PlayStation Store will never be able to compete with any other store front. Especially Steam.

Neither will Xbox. That’s probably why, if they’re going all in on digital as well, they're allowing Steam in the next Xbox. But I don’t see how they benefit from it unless Steam has guaranteed a percentage rate of sales.

There absolutely is a market for physical video games. 15% of all PS game sales is still millions of games and tens of millions of revenue.

Sony could absolutely profitably serve that market as a niche if they wanted to. Charge publishers more for disc orders, publishers would probably order smaller quantities of physical discs and sell them directly as custom orders at a premium, the same way limited quantity collectors editions are.

Niche products exist all over the place. Most physical proponents are diehards and would absolutely pay an extra $10 up front for a disc version.

The issue is that unlike something like vinyl records where anybody can just press them, Sony is the gatekeeper to all discs and they are actively wanting to kill off this segment of the market.

They clearly think whatever money they lose from this they will make up from killing the resell market and elbowing out retailers for their cuts.

Smart call by Sony here, no one buys physical anymore and the profit margins are even lower for those sales. Zero reason to keep it around just like Rockstar and the new Xbox.

A very small vocal minority on social media is completely meaningless. Every single quarter physical sales drop more and more. By the time a PS6 releases you'll be under 10% of game sales being physical. Just no point. No one has a disc drive, stop losing money to make discs.

Getting rid of physical may be due to digital sales overwhelming physical sales, but what they’re also doing is controlling the price of its products.

Never again will you be able to purchase a 10 yr old game for $10 or less that originally sold for $70+.

For the very few games I purchase on PlayStation, I’d gladly pay an extra $10 for a disc than I would digital, and keep it forever.

ETA: I’m curious to know what the ratio of games sold is for those that are offered on both disc and digital.

There’s a lot of indie games sold that aren’t even available on disc. Incorporating those against disc sales is unfair imo. It might not make a big difference, but I’m willing to bet it’s noticeable.

Not just digital sales but also profit margin, estimates show $2-4 per game for physical media. Split the middle and say $3, that's $3M in lost money per 1 million copies sold.

For several games a year and bigger ones at that, it adds up quickly.

2025 Sony estimated 60-75 million physical copies sold, at an average of $3 lost per sale to create the physical editions, that's $180M-225M lost.

It's also rapidly shrinking, Q4 had the lowest physical sales on record at just 15%.

It often goes by prestige of the game and first party selling the most physical copies, Ghost of Yotei was the highest at 34% physical sales while yearly titles like Madden, FIFA etc go as low as 12% physical and all the numbers decline more and more every quarter.

That just isnt true and if you dont understand why then you dont understand the basic fundamentals of businesses.

Just look at the digital sale going on right now for July.

Arkham Knight $4.99
Battlefield 1 $5.99
The Last of Us Remaster $9.99
Bloodborne $9.99
Shadow of Mordor & War Bundle $6.99
Persona 5 $5.99

Plus a whole lot more

And that includes games that never had a physical version in the first place. It's not an apples to apples comparison.

The honest numbers comparing physical game sales to digital game sales for games that offer both a physical and a digital version are much much closer.

Will prices decrease over time? Maybe. Nintendo certainly doesn't do that, so I'm not sure why we'd assume Playstation would.

Does the secondary market for physical versions that can be purchased at Game Stop or from your local garage sale help drive these prices down? Absolutely. No doubt about it.

Ironically, your post only succeeded in showing that you yourself are the one who doesn't understand business. Sure, multi-platform games will still have competition. Who is PS's competition for a PS exclusive title that is only sold digitally and only playable on the PS6?

My primary concern with the loss of a physical market is that Sony is going to have a de facto monopoly with their digital storefront. Retailers, secondary markets, and the like create an incentive for digital sales. That will all go away now.

It’s obvious that the market largely preferred digital regardless but I wonder if the sales will diminish in a purely digital market.

It’s not a one to one comparison when you look at pc which has been fully digital for a while. The pc market has various digital storefronts in direct competition with one another, discount key sites, easier options for piracy, etc.

I don’t care about physical at all for my own consumer preferences but it’s a concern about where Sony goes from here.
