PlayStation has been getting massively ratioed for a week straight since they announced this bullshite.

They’re scared.

I truly don’t think this is going to go the way they think it will.

The ps6 will cost minimum 1000 dollars. If consoles have no physical media they’re just a shitty pc. People will move to gaming pcs

Remember lads if buying isn’t owning, pirating isn’t stealing

Probably a lost cause for those who don't care but here are two of the best takes I've seen, an article from PC Magazine.

https://www.pcmag.com/opinions/think-you-own-your-playstation-games-think-again

and a youtube video from popular gaming youtuber Scott the Woz. He's normally so goofy and humerous so seeing him legitimately pissed off says alot.

Even if you are a 100% digital only player and always intend to say that way, this move is clearly bad for you and bad for gaming as a whole and just bad for consumers and people and humanity in general beyond just this industry.

There's plenty of things that people don't care about because they think it doesn't effect them personally when in reality it absolutely does, either directly or indirectly.

Except they didn’t. You can play digital games. You can’t eat digital pizzas. It’s not really funny, creative, or remotely similar in concept

Good question. Probably nothing unfortunately. The fact the general public is so helpless against all this horrible shite being pushed on us right and left is telling in and of itself.

I'm just trying to support efforts to undo or at least revise their decision, and if that fails will just going full PC for gaming, even if it's a little pricier and less convenient. The upsides now far outweighy my laziness. Sony has been an absolute trainwreck since they moved leadership to decision making to the US and it will be an honor to use this as the reason to drop them for good

It’s a joke baw

I don’t think it was meant to have serious thought put into it about the real life practical logistics of digital pizzas

I know it’s a joke. I specifically said it wasn’t a funny one. The best jokes are those that are rooted in reality.

There’s a PS5 emulator that’s been worked on for years that are almost fully ready to operate any all ps5 games.

Until now it could only emulate the lowest of low in terms of games and how big or little they are demanding on the system.

Saw on X they expect within a year it will be fullly complete to emulate any game that runs on a ps5 up to even GTA6

Sony keeps taking massive Ls they deserve everyone

Pirating their games when that emulator is available on pc is a moral act of goodness

The total number of countries seeking antitrust charges against Sony grows to 7 to my knowledge with Mexico and the Netherlands joining the other 5 just this morning

There is a marketing concept known as Q Rating. I remember as a kid it being heavily discussed a lot in the 80's and 90's but you really don't hear that much about it anymore at least discussed on the news like it used to be.

Q Rating is essentially how well liked, respected, or otherwise positive people think your brand is. It can apply to individuals personally as well. It has to be measured completely separate from your financials because you can have a situation where you have a very profitable enterprise with a very low Q rating.

An example would be something like a big oil or big pharmaceuticals company. Heavily profitable but extremely disliked. Having a low Q rating is risky because it makes your position way more tenuous. People fundamentally dislike you and are happy to abandon you if they can and are essenitally happy to see you fail.

It really seems like a lifetime ago but there was a time when almost all the major players in the gaming industry both hardware and software, were once almost all perceived as extremely "cool". The overall sentiment of players towards the gaming industry as a whole has nosedived to a staggering extent.

EA was probably the first big gaming company that garnered massive hate in the mid to late 2000's but these days it's basically any big gaming company. It's accelerated big time the past decade or so.

The two biggest reasons:

The massive corporatization of gaming. All the buyouts, consolidation, mergers, they've all rolled up into these mega-corporate empires who don't give a shite about the products or the players. The people who actually loved gaming and "gamers" who were in positions of power in these companies have been almost all pushed out. These companies are now run just like any other soulless corporate husks.

The industry also got overrun quickly by political and social activists and became openly hostile towards huge chunks of their traditional fan base.

Sony is making it EXTREMELY easy to leave them behind. I was tired of all their bullshite even before this.

Interesting stuff about the Q rating I didnt know any of that stuff

But your post is 100% over the target;

I have had every PlayStation since the ps1

I bought the mid gen refresh ps4 pro which I felt really was needed and justified at the time

I bought the ps5 pro even though I thought it wasnt needed like the ps4s was because to this day the industry and almost all studios in it have yet to even come close to realizing what the base ps5 is even capable of.but I wanted to support them

frick Sony. I will never own a ps6 primarily because of all this shite but also because we have reached diminishing returns when it comes to hardware and how good games can look accompanied by the ever increasing new tech to achieve those diminishing returns. TLDR a ps6 will be useless
Sony still has a huge chunk of their base on ps4 last I saw was they were just able to get it below 40% recently

Sony isnt anywhere close to being in as good a position as a brand, company, or just how theyre viewed specifically for the abysmal failure of the entire generation for first party games to be able to pull this off and it work out how they imagine it will.

As I said earlier the insomniac leak a few years back shows they and likely all game publishers are lying about the physical vs digital buying breakdown

Sony will not come out better for this and risk losing a ton

Correct. They're not giving an apples to apples comparison. They're wanting people to buy in to the idea that gamers buying cheap arcade games digitally is the same as gamers wanting AAA titles to go all digital.

At the time of the leak it was shown the all games bought for all PlayStation consoles that fiscal year so the ps4 and ps5 including not just sonys first party games but third party games as well so this is total sales volume broke down to roughly 60/40 digital and physical.

That leak happened in 2023 if I remember right and they are correct when they say that number every year does trend more to digital so lets say that is now something like 65/35 or even be super generous and its 70/30

Sony is making a major bet that the 30% can be forced by lack of options to move to digital and for the ones that dont and leave their ecosystem all together their numbers wont be high enough to offset their new much much larget profit margins completely cutting physical out of the equation.

From a company who has spent this entire generation barely making any first party titles at all which is the main reason people buy consoles when polled and cant even get roughly 40% of their entire install base to upgrade to ps5 this seems like the fricking most dumb gamble in history.

I hope they crash and burn

I think this is a very short sighted bet. Maybe it will work short term, but it won't take long for people to realize digital games are cheaper on PC where there is competition than on PS where you can only buy from Sony and no one else has a store.

I feel the same. I will drop XBOX like a bad habit if they go this same route. Probably just a matter of time but they haven't confirmed yet.
