Yeah as I have said many times before, PS5 is my final PlayStation. If I'm going to be forced to be locked into a digital storefront it sure as hell isn't going to be Sony's.

To me it's also really shitty to do this at the end of the PS5 lifespan.
People got a PS5 under the impression disc based games would be available and to just stop that right at the end is shitty.
I think everyone was pretty much resigned to the eventual PS6 being digital only, given how they optionalized the disc drive I think that's not a surprrise.
Regardless, I'll be using Steam as my digital storefront exclusively.

There will be games coming out for PS5 for at least the next 5 years. Even post the PS6 launch there will be cross-gen releases for years and years. Given the new console prices the cross-gen era will probably be even longer than it has been previously.

Hate this. Even though I elected to go all-digital with my games toward the end of the PS4 cycle, I love the idea of physical media. I collect vinyls and 4K UHD discs for movies/series' I hold in high regard. Only reason I switched to digital for games is because the writing was on the wall and figured I may as well get out in front of it with how desperately consoles/developers wanted to push digital.

As much as I’d love for this to happen, I don’t think Xbox will have the balls to do it. They’ll simply follow the trend out of desperation because that’s what companies do now.

They can say they'll support physical and win some good will, but they won't. They're just going to follow suit.
Console makers are going to cut every cost they can to offset storage/memory costs, and a disc drive is the first & easiest thing to cut in a market where 85% of game purchases are digital.

You're probably right, but the new CEO has been making some good moves so far cutting dead weight studios who were just pushing out unprofitable woke nonsense and garbage, or unreasonably slow, game releases. Maybe she understands the industry enough to understand this opportunity.
Regardless, if all consoles go this route it will end consoles. There will be no advantage to owning a console over a PC.

I have largely adopted digital games starting with the Xbox one/ps4 generation, but I don’t like the trend of total abandonment of physical media.
I dont trust any of these corporations and they continue to find ways to tighten their grip on access to content, pricing of content, and our “rights” as consumers.
We are entering a brave new shitty world.
I just hope Gaben has a solid heir in place for steam. They are the best option for digital content but that is going to change inevitably. If he has a solid successor, the enshittification can be slowed at least.
