Evolution is a bitch, but you have to just embrace change as you just cannot have it all. Ownership is a failure of the consumer being weak, and it is up to us to make it happen. We can complain all we want, but as long as people keep "buying" games/movies they do not truly own, then nothing can be done. The market will change if the consumer gives the middle finger to streaming/digital only and lack of true ownership.

There is a part of me that believes the pendulum will swing back, as it always does. Time to be pirates again, as that shook the music/entertainment industry.

Music
Phonograph Cylinders
Shellac Records
Vinyl Records
8-Track
Cassettes
CDs
Digital download
Streaming

Video Games
Built-in
ROM cartridges
Floppies
CD-ROM
DVD
Blue-ray
Digital download
Streaming

Yeah the entire goal is for them to completely eliminate game borrowing, trading, resales, region lockout workarounds, etc. There's absolutely nothing good in it or the consumer, it's just a complete powergrab by them. We already litigated all of this back in Xbox One vs PS4 E3 debacle. But it's clear PS now feels they are in a position to do this and get away with it.

They will have complete control over the entire experience and the day the servers go offline you'll have absolutely nothing to show for every dime you spend.

Furthermore at any given time you can violate whatever BS "terms of service" charge they throw your way and they can revoke everything. You can have hundreds of games taken from you and you'll have absolutely no recourse to get it back. The fine print basically says you have no rights and no ownership and they can do whatever the hell they want.

And yes it does appear that this completely kills off vendors like Limited Run Games as well.

They acquire the blank discs that they ultimately distribute from Sony themselves, due to licensing and security protocols.

The end result here was that people just pay a monthly fee for spotify and never own any music.

Yeah this is pretty much end of the line for video games as a physical construct.

It was always inevitable I just wished have been done more cleanly. Shoulda let PS5 have discs till the end of it's life and make the PS6 totally non-physical. Weird to have the PS5 launch with a disc drive and support disc based games for most of it's life and then right at the end while it's still ongoing pull the plug. Would it be really hard to just let to continue and then sunset it for hte PS6?

I guess game collection and game rooms and stuff will still be a thing but will be all older consoles and just custom made empty boxes and collectibles and shite.

Jez Corden is wrong far more often than he's right.

ETA: It's not even a "report." Those people wrote an article about a tweet that is obviously just speculation.

As much as I’d love for this to happen, I don’t think Xbox will have the balls to do it.

I’d bet good money you are correct, but what a layup for Microsoft to miss. Unless they literally just can’t financially continue producing physical media, they should be all over this. That X-Box One reveal where Sony dunked on them with the “how to borrow a game” video sent their trajectory into the shitter. They now have a small crack of daylight to fight back a little and they’ll just tuck their tails and conform.

From the article:

As for Project Helix, our sources also suggest that Microsoft's next-generation console will drop the disc drive, too.

You are adamant that Helix will have a disc drive, so I guess your sources are better than theirs

Xbox's strategy is gamepass, why the hell would they push physical media. Ya'll really don't understand what they are trying to do.

I don't know that it will or not, I just think it will be an extremely stupid decision if they sell the next gen consoles with no disc drive. I certainly won't be buying one.

At no point has XBox's entire strategy been Game Pass.

Seems like they're retuning the Game Pass strategy because there have been rumors that they've paused licensing of third-party games.

Their strategy has led to a disastrous loss of market share over the past several years. Perhaps they need a new strategy.
