Did I do this thread a few months ago?

I'm really getting the MMO bug since I left LOTRO due to its stance to become Pay-to-Win.

While I like both systems, depending on the context, Freemium games can quickly become Pay to win. If I am a subscribing customer, I should get all benefits and LOTRO went far away from that to where a subscriber would have to pay more money on top of the monthly fee to get certain things. Stupid.

Anyways, I digress. I need something else, or at least something to pass the time until GW2 (SW:TOR got some fairly mediocre reviews from E3). I see City of Heroes is going Freemuim, and that might be good for a few months, but that's not until August.

I had one stint in Eve and always wanted to go back, but I couldn't get into it all that much. I haven't tried Runes of Magic or any of the other free games.

I want to try Rift, and I did try the beta, but I wasn't completely impressed. I haven't played League of Legends in a while either.

Rift? Eve? I see the Star Trek thread, but I read more about it, and am not sure if I would like it. Did Age of Conan ever get better?

Thoughts?

Honestly I'd stay away from MMOs. They're all the same grind. It's fun at first, especially once you get to the endgame content. You get to experience all the new stuff. Eventually MMOs feel like a job though. Just repetitively grinding the same instances over and over, farming professions for money, etc. I really liked Rift but I'm burnt out on MMOs and couldn't stand the grind.

Yeah it's a grind if you try to keep up with the idiots that play 5+ hours a day. I was one of those idiots for years. Now I'm more laid back, and don't give a shite about being first. You wouldn't believe how much fun they can be if you take this approach. Now if you don't have any self control you might need to stay away.

Go with EVE man. They just had a huge visual/gameplay update release yesterday. The tutorials actually explain things this time around, setting you off on career possibilities that reward with you free ships and skills. I realize the first time you played EVE probably dropped you in and said "good luck" but there is more guidance for those who need it now.

I totally get that, but EVEs skill training system suits the amount of actual time I am able to put into a game. I don't have the time or inclination to grind my way to success so being able to run a few missions here and there while skills train in the background is the best set-up for me.

Yup. I had no idea what the heck to do my first go round with it.

And I saw that too, waiting for the reactions, as that seems like some fairly big changes. So many choices, and I hate devoting a lot of time to something I won't stick with.

I patched up Global Agenda last night, might give that a shot.

I have been out of the mmo game for years and just picked up Rift, I am loving it so far. I recommend it, until star wars comes of course.

Sigh Ultima Online. That's like the guy asking about a FPS to play and telling him to give Doom a try. I don't see how I could look past how bad the game looks even if it had the best game play ever.

What is the game play about? I know nothing about the game. What does it offer that newer games don't?

Agree completely, but where are the good multiplayer games?

I enjoy the occasional FPS, but damn I get tired of them quickly. League of Legends is ok, but they keep nerfing too many heroes to stay with it. I get good with Teemo... nerf. Get good with Jarvan.... nerf. Get good with Morgana....nerf. I hate that cycle.

I like the idea of arena matches (I think Bloodline is alright).

I just need something multiplayer. Haven't really tried minecraft, but I am probably late to that party.

Rift, Eve or STO?

Star Trek Online is awesome! If you still have reservations, check out the game after Season Four debuts sometime next month.

They are adding a whole new ground combat system where you can spray multiple targets, dumb throw grenades, and even toss grenades over walls.

Space combat is the best I've ever seen in any game, EVE Online included. I try out new builds and new starts all the time.

The three classes are each great in their own right. I have three max level characters and another on the cusp, and I've had a blast leveling each one.

Big things are on the horizon for this game. Like player-owned starbases [guild halls], and territory and resource contention.

I'm really looking forward to shuttlebays, and the option to customize my ship's interior.

It's a great game, and it's getting better with every season.

And there's a free trial?

Ok so what should i be? I usually play hybrids. I enjoy a strong offence with some casting/buffing/debuffing capabilities. Thoughts?

Not only is there a free trial, but it is always free, and infinitely replayable.

Meaning you can try all three classes, up to level four.

As far as hybrid classes, yes and no.

No, as in there's only Engineer, Tactical, and Science classes available, with no mix of the three available.

Yes, as in the bridge officers (boffs) you select determine what abilities you have available in either space or ground combat.

In addition, you get to select and train your bridge officers any way you see fit. And you can also train and specialize your character any way you see fit. You can choose to train more engineering-related skills as a science officer, and thus boost the abilities of your engineering boffs.

For example, I'm currently leveling my science officer, and I have two different ships I switch him between. One has two tactical positions, the other two engineering positions. Thus one is more offensive-minded, the other more defensive-minded.

On my away team, I'm experimenting with a melee-specced tactical officer with knockdown and interrupt abilities. My other three are two engineers with turrets, drones, and generators, and a science boff who heals.

There any number of bridge officer combinations available possible. And your character has many different kits he can wear, each giving you different bonus abilities on the ground.

Your space combat will be affected by which skills you choose to specialize in at the expense of others.

In addition, any character can choose any type of ship. Many tactical characters, for example, choose to play in cruisers rather than escorts, for greater survivability. Conversely many engineers choose escorts for greater offense.

So to answer your question about having " a strong offence with some casting/buffing/debuffing capabilities", definitely.

As a science officer on the ground, you could do as many do and go with four engineer boffs, each with turrets and drones. With 12 turrets and 4 drones, things would die very fast.

I don't think you'd be at all disappointed with the choices available to you now, and you'll get even more next month, when Season Four debuts.

I might try it, but E3 had some very mediocre reviews, and it isn't out for another 6 months or more.

I love Eve, especially how you get expansion packs every 6 months for "free" with the subscription costs. And I love the fact that there is no levels, grinding, etc.

It does kinda kick you into the deep end with its free form nature though.

You pretty much HAVE to get into a corp to guide you along and expose you to the higher end stuff like galatic wars, etc.
